If you fit the heater the other way around, you can route the hot air pipe through the back of the seat box and pipe round to the centre of the seat box and up between the seats. The cold air is drawn in through the seat box lid. (Installed in a 110.)

Have you tried a code reader? Could be something simple like a crank position sensor, but you need to check for fault codes.

I think that your engine has been reconditioned. The original number appears to have been removed with a router and then re-etched, Normally Tdi numbers are stamped /etched into the rough cast surface of the engine block, yours has a machined slot. I would suggest that the extra S is to indicate...

Is the VIN plate present under the bonnet, on the top of the pedal box?

Is the S in the same font as the 16L******? If it is different it may have been added to indicate some form of repair.

From memory there was only one fixing on the rear of the transfer box, possibly a further one in the engine bay.

I have replaced mine via the centre panel in the seat box.
