Get a multimeter onto the guage and check which one is the variable, the - and the + and make sure it's wired up right. I had this problem and that's what solved it.

Fit the 300 at any cost, don't put a td in, they are rubbish. The td will get you low to mid 20's, the 300 should get you 30-32 mpg. It also actually works, which the td won't for long. It also actually has some power meaning you don't need to change down into first to go up a 1:100 slope...

Can i respectfully recommend that you do what you can to try and stay below 168 mph if at all possible.
