    P38A Temperature gauge

Around here you get a $335 fine for fiddling with your phone while driving. I suppose you could set it in a holder for constant viewing. Would have to set the phone to not fade to black. I am going to see if I can put the adapter/sensor in the top hose as I don't really think I need as much...

    P38A Temperature gauge

OK, I can see that if there was no water flow. Need to keep an eye on the dash guage then. Maybe I will look into a guage with a thermocouple bolted to the block just out of curiosity.

P38A another way to hold back brushes when rebuilding a compressor

In the photo you can see a gray ring. I am told you are supposed to slip this ring between the brushes to hold them apart. The commutator pushes the ring back in place when you assemble the end piece.

    P38A Temperature gauge

If hotter water is going to be coming out of the radiator I am sure I will see the temperature go up on my gauge. I know what is normal so any increase other than when going up a long hill would be worrisome.

P38A another way to hold back brushes when rebuilding a compressor

I had a compressor that would only run if the orange wire was shorted to ground. I bought a couple of thermal switches so decided yesterday to open it up and change out the one there. Took the end plate off and checked thermal switch with multimeter and it was fine. Hmmm. Looked at ground point...

    P38A Temperature gauge

I had my Hawkeye connected to my 99 with 4.6 while driving around and it said my temperature was 92 to 95C. This quite a bit warmer than the 180F/82C reported by my Autometer sensor located in the lower radiator hose so Datatek is correct about that flow being cooler. Can't locate the adaptor...

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

So I took the spare that didn't seem to work to the shop along with another spare that I had not yet tried. The first spare tested bad, blown diodes, but the second one tested good so installed it. Started car and my voltmeter that plugs into the cigar socket read 14.2 volts. Whoopee, better...

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

Shop suggested $260 depending on condition. I might take one apart and see what I can do but need a working one in the meantime.

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

That bare wire is the ground wire from my temperature sensor adapter which is in the lower radiator hose. Rubber hose does not ground well.

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

Well in the photo you can see the cable with the red end loops past the SAI and then over to the positive terminal. As for comments on voltage drop, when the alternator was working it was putting out 13.9 volts. I am now seeing 12.2 at the battery with the car running for a difference of 1.7...

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

Battery is only a couple months old and charged up fully. Alternator should still put out 13.8 to 14.1 even with a bad battery. Costs me $10 to have the alternator tested so will do that. If bad, as expected, will repair depending on cost estimate.

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

The wire from the alternator goes directly to the battery so checking at battery is same thing. Neither wire at the alternator was broken.

P38A many symptoms from low battery voltage due to dead alternator

Went out yesterday with the intention of tweaking my EAS settings but noticed after a few minutes that my tach and speedo had stopped working. Then I got an ABS and TC warning on the dash, four lights on the EAS control switch and the car seemed to be stuck in one of the higher gears. Windows...

    P38A Matrix leak

I replaced my O rings with Viton ones over a year ago and was good until yesterday when I noticed an antifreeze smell and discovered a small dribble on the transmission tunnel. Took the side panel off the transmission and managed to get the hex bit on the clamping screw and tightened a bit more...

L322 suspension reset with a Hawkeye total

I have a Hawkeye Total and several dongles for my P38 and L322. They all work with the cable that came with the unit so I doubt you need a different cable but the need for the dongle is probable. When you hook up the Hawkeye and select thesuspension option it should tell you which dongle you need.

    P38A Temperature gauge

My 99 with 4.6 cruises at 185F/85C. That is measured with an Autometer gauge with the sensor in the lower radiator hose. The dash Guage sits just left of center and hardly ever moves. I don't think I have ever gone above 210F/98C.

Range rover 4.2 Supercharged Head Gasket or Crack?

If the plugs are out you might as well do a compression test. Should tell you if a head gasket is gone.

    Other General tools and tips

Just a note on that self amalgamating tape. You need to cut off a suitable length and then pull the two ends apart as far as they will go. The stretching sets it up to bond together.
