First defender but I cannot identify the engine

That's good about the chassis, they tend to go rusty on the back crossmember, front end normally stays clean because of the oil leaks . You are correct about the wading/drain plug, there is also one at the bottom of the timing cover on the engine

    Steve's disco 2 rebuild

Made some progress on the front bumper today, trimmed the winch tray to the correct size and tack welded it on, bent both ends of the bumper back then cut and drilled the mounting plates which will hopefully get welded on next weekend. I've also started to make a full roofrack...

    New wheels

Hi, I can't help with your question, you might want to ask over in the freelander section, more likely someone who knows will see it and let you know. I would have thought the speedo works of the abs sensor? Im not sure though. Steve

    Steve's disco 2 rebuild

Thanks mate, did think about it but we don't get much stuff galvanised anymore at work, would have saved some money without paying the handling charge the galvanisers screw you for. Think it was about £70 a couple years ago. Plus if it gets chipped it's going to rust anyway

    Steve's disco 2 rebuild

Made the recovery lugs at work this week and welded them in today. Just got a little bit more to do then it's finished at long last ready for powdercoating. Also cut and folded some 4mm for the front bumper, so will start that next (might get a chance tomorrow).

Hi, pleased to meet you all !

Hi and welcome. I seem to remember the vcu were a problem with the freelander 1 which caused the ird to fail then the cheapest option was to have 2wd rather than replacing the ird unit. I couldn't tell you what the issue was though.
