To be honest ive got a TDI for local runs and such but find it a touch gutless for heavy towing work. Economy wise I cant see an LPG V8 being much worse when towing 3 ton than 300TDI. Add to that the benefits in comfort and ease of driving the V8 auto seems a better option for long distance...

Mine did that as well after I changed the rad and thermostat. Its probably simply that the engine is now running at the right temperature.

Alternator got drowned with some luck it may start working again once dried out. I'd be tempted to take it off and put it in hotel room if you can. Even if you can't get it apart it may dry out enough to start working.
