I’m fairly certain that I used the engine loom from the na when I did my conversion, and the 300tdi alternator connected up exactly the same as the n/a one....I’m sure I didn’t have to change a thing.

That looks like valve stem caps. Remove the rocker cover and have a look to see if some are missing. It’s not that uncommon ( my 300 had some similar debris in the sump) They are easy to fit new ones - slacken off the rocker and new caps can be dropped onto the top ov the valve stem. The bigger...

I don’t think the box matters particularly. The biggest problem I think will be the pump mount (which iirc is part of a very rare alternator bracket), and crank pulley. I can’t remember very well but I think parts from a 200tdi may fit but don’t hold me to that. This thread on another forum may...

I have a discovery bottle jack behind the seat in my 90. At home I use a trolley jack. I’ve heard the jacks out of sprinter vans are good on land rovers as they have a cradle for the axle to sit in.

I would say that if the whole box has been resealed, it should not have anywhere near enough residual oil on it to cause a drip. They’ve either used crap seals, gaskets etc, or damaged one (or more) when fitting. It’s easily done......I fitted a new, Corteco input shaft seal on my transfer box...
