Freelander 1 TD4 engine electronic thingy - what is it?

That's true. I can't find a maker's name on it anywhere. As the car has done 150,000 miles, and certainly hasn't had a fuel pump since 100,000 miles (maybe never), adds weight to the suggestion that it did nothing!

Freelander 1 TD4 engine electronic thingy - what is it?

Did yours actually make any more power?! I honestly couldn't feel a blind bit of difference when I took mine off! (But then, as far as I'm aware, my HP pump is original and this box has been on for at least 50,000 miles and the car has done 150,000)!

What have you done to your Freelander today

I think the problem might be the insides of the small bore tubes in the fuel tank cradle. There will be no way of getting all the rust out from inside them and they might be too small a bore for the zinc to be able to find a path out of them.

Freelander 1 What cat to buy? 1.8k

I've been told that some aftermarket cats are cheap because they don't contain some of the expensive chemicals. They should be "three-way" cats, oxidising CO to CO2, HC to CO2 and water; and reducing some oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen. As the MOT gas analysers can't measure NOx, some bright...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Well I never knew that! I just remembered I have a Bosch Automotive Handbook on my shelf, and sure enough, it does appear in the glossary!

What have you done to your Freelander today

Odd? I've never heard a manufacturer call it that!

Ta. I wish manufacturers would all call them the same thing!

What have you done to your Freelander today

Thanks Nodge, What's an EDC? Presumably, unless they can also do something to the turbo wastegate and increase the boost, all these devices do, is make it run a bit richer? I can't think of any other way they'd be able to get more air in to take advantage of the extra fuel? OK, I know...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Ah, thanks. Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought they fed duff information about air temperature to the ECU so it thought the incoming air was colder (and therefore more dense) and gave it a bit more fuel accordingly. Is that not the case? Does it just tell the ECU that the fuel pressure is too...

    Bolt missing?

If they've been missing a while, you might have to clear the rust out of the threads in the captive nuts before you put bolts in. M10 x 1.5 pitch.

Wot's a "Synergy"? Is it a similar kind of thing to what I've just found?

    Bolt missing?

Mine are bolted up tight with a steel washer under the head of each of them. Not sure if they're supposed to be like that though!

What have you done to your Freelander today

Fitted some silicone induction hoses so it's not hissing now. Also replaced a few maggoty-looking vacuum hoses, but chickened out of doing the long one that goes from the vacuum reservoir, right round the back of the engine and down to somewhere near the turbo, 'cause it looked like it was...

Freelander 1 TD4 engine electronic thingy - what is it?

Well, just been out for about 15 miles and can honestly say I can't feel any difference. Might have been my imagination, but maybe a bit less smoke when I booted it. In all other respects, I really couldn't feel anything at all. My sister wouldn't have fitted it, so it's likely to have been...

Freelander 1 TD4 engine electronic thingy - what is it?

Excellent! Thanks. I was suspicious of it because it looked like it had no natural home, and the casing didn't "look" OEM. No name on it that I can see. There's a shiny label that looks like it might have once been a bar code. I've just taken the lid off, but everything inside it is potted...

    Freelander 1 Transfer box help

Does that match the photos above? To me, they look more like damage from metal particles in the photos that appear in the articles shown in the links. Maybe a combination of the two? Maybe just general wear and tear (150,000 is a reasonable innings, I guess?) so that the case hardening is...

Freelander 1 TD4 engine electronic thingy - what is it?

...and where should it go, please? I'm just replacing my maggoty induction hoses, and noticed this thing has been flopping about, dangling on its wires and getting partially melted by the EGR tube! It appears to be spliced into the engine's wiring loom under the inlet manifold. Looks...

    Freelander 1 Transfer box help

More stuff here, but really talking about grease-lubricated bearings rather than oil. https://www.timken.com/pdf/5892_Bearing%20Damage%20Analysis%20Brochure.pdf Still, everything seems to suggest that mine failed by contaminated lubricant with metal particles in it that were higher than the...
