Disco 1 How were the Chassis’s originally painted?

They were painted with English sea water inside to give a traditional British patina to the steel…. I haven’t noticed any inner coating when I’ve cut sections out of d1 chassis. That’s nuts that you have a new deadstock one!! Any pics of your build?

Ffs I bought one too hoping it would just fit 😂🤦‍♂️

What’s the plastic bit you want for gear surround mate? Just the trim? I’ve got spare auto stick trim bits and a stick

    Try again….

Welded up both mate. I always dig the sealer out and re- seal (have on my other) but this one I decided to weld up! Bit ugly but it cures the issue!

    Try again….

Evening prep work. Taking dings out bonnet and prepping bits for epoxy. All corrosion removed. One dent is a bit tricky to fix. It’s on edge right by the brace. Smoothed out but quite a low spot. Annoying as the rest is near perfect now. Going to leave it for now and give another sand and block...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Another interesting specialist video just watched…. Builder seems confident that once out of the emissions and lean running scenario that if a block hasn’t cracked, and is then installed on a richer and cooler run, there’s no reason it should/will. Interesting how peoples views and thoughts...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

I think a lot of people would argue with that. It’s a fact that the machining was poor across most of them. I think even cosworth made some of their blocks to see if they could sort it. They will slip liners due to block. They will blow hg due to block. Yeah they might be bang on if never get...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

If it was a Toyota Id agree. However, the rv8 block is a ticking time bomb for the liners to slip either way. You may get lucky but I don’t fancy chance after spending years building a solid shell. The cost is worth it to me as it will be the finishing touch to a project that got cancelled the...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Probably 3 or 4 but I’m not interested in stripping the ****er down each time and I’d also rather pay once cry once! Yeah discussed rebuild costs with turners as I wanted some head work too.

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

I don’t know… I think it’s due to failure stories putting me off even though I know the failures are due to the liners 😂🤦‍♂️

Tis there ductile liner. I can’t tell you much more than that mate. I know it’s o ring sealed though

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

The top hat liner is sealed at the top by the top hat liner then at the bottom it’s an o ring seal against a shelf. It becomes wet liner in dry block

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

That is a good point re the freshen up and buying one off the eBay supplier. But, I think I’d be more comfortable with it built fresh and having the 3 year guarantee out the box. Unless I can find a rotter with a v8 I’ll likely be looking at buying the v8, stripping it then taking to turners...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Drawing and thought was correct. Becomes a wet liner in a dry block. Just spoken to turners. Very helpful as always and thats where I’ll be going. There’s 3 year guarantee on the liners. Yes big expense but future proof and you pay for skill and experience.

Thanks for replies chaps. I understood it as you do and have asked Frida to confirm. I thought point A and point B were impenetrable and even if you had a block with cracks around the jacket the tophat would seal the lot off. Point B would be a shelf to prevent any issues on the bottom of bore...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

and here lies the conflict. I assumed it was sealed both ends and that turners used a compound to do so whereas @Henry_b view is that water can still creep! I’ll give Frida an email for clarity!

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

I may be wrong but I think Thor is tricky with megasquirt as different injectors and high fuel pressures. I’m sure I was told the others are easier to work with ecu wise. Am I correct in saying, (@Henry_b you also may know) once a block is top hat linered, it’s proofed from both slipping a liner...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Well, this was going to be off the cards but I’m quite keen on doing it still now! I should’ve bought the rotten d1 on eBay a while back but never mind. So many different opinions on these rv8s and v8 in general. I’ve spoken with a few people, including turners, Nige from megasquirt (really...
