Freelander 1 Wattson: Freelander EV Project

Hi Guys, It's been over a year since I posted on this thread. I have had to wait for over a year for Mouser to stock specific chips I needed to build the Battery management circuit boards using an open-source design hence the long delay on this project. This has been resolved so figured I share...

Everything checks out from the motor 12V tests but I will not be able to do any high power tests until I build the battery pack. I am using 8 48V 44Ah LG Chem modules for an initial 16KWh as a proof of concept as I figured not to invest heavily in batteries considering the price drop happening...

Hi Guys!!!! It has been a while since I updated here but in this part of the world, things move a tad bit slower. After waiting for almost 9months, I finally got my Tesla Small rear-drive unit about a month ago. I went straight in and started the inverter controller board swap to the...

Speed will be supplied by the ABS ECU so I don't need to code for it.

My car is petrol. I figured these are the only signals that must be fed back into CAN in my case: 1. Gear Shift Position - Required by ABS 2. Engine RPM - required by Electric steering and instrument cluster (will probably substitute this with drive unit current) 3. Throttle Position - required...

@Alibro Hope you are well. I got some CAN data from my hippo that's also due for conversion. I can confirm that most of the CAN messages are the same as yours apart from one. See table below; I have CAN message ID 43F which I confirmed to be for the JATCO Auto-Gearbox but I don't have ID...

Hi Guys, Been a while since I posted any updates to this project. I live in Kenya, so shipping parts in isn't easy especially during this Covid period. Thought I update on parts I have received for this conversion: 1. Fully electric steering rack from a Honda Civic 2005 2. Tesla Gen 2 11KW...

You are right to an extent. Here is the simple math: If you want the APPROXIMATE range (miles) a battery pack will cover, just multiply the battery capacity by 3. An EV will consume between 200-650W/km depending on throttle mapping, motor efficiency, electric accessories and general road...

Thanks. I did look through his thread during my research phase of the project, however, I wanted a sort of drop in front brake upgrade as I didnt want to install brackets or put in too much effort(restoring the calipers is more work than I need) ;). I actually found out that the Acura TL-S...

Update on Front Brake upgrade Got the parts(just in case someone else wants to do the same): 1. Acura 2007 TL-S Front Brembo 4 -piston calipers 2. Acura 2007 TL-S Front Rotors 3. Acura 2007 TL-S Front Ceramic brake pads. 4. 38mm spacers to get wheel clearance with my current stock rims. I...

Most FL1s here are converted to FWD due to issues with engines, gearboxes and transmissions that are too expensive to replace. They are swapped to FWD Toyota engines and gearboxes with all the rear diff parts removed. So I have driven quite a number of FWD FL1s and they are perfectly fine...

Always wanted one of these and always heard about the mechanical issues with the few guys that have them around. Made the prefect candidate for EV for daily use here as this is a small country too ;)

Thanks. This is quite interesting. In my country, a used FL1 still costs $6000 or more! :D

The small Tesla drive units are pretty small and compact IMO. Mounting them shouldn't also be an issue considering how well packaged they are.

Freelander 1 Wattson: Freelander EV Project

The idea is to do the project in such a way that I can still drive the car as my daily and be able to do so over a 6 month period with minimal downtime. The front and rear brake upgrades have cost me a total of $800 for parts, all labor is mine so basically free. I understand Tesla parts are...

Thanks. That is actually in the project timeline I have shared above. Will go to 2WD first before full conversion.

Thank you. No, am not reusing the gearbox or IRD due to their potency for issues down the road. I plan to use a Tesla Model S/X small Front Drive unit installed at the front first. Then get a Tesla Rear Small Drive unit for the rear later to get back 4×4 functionality.

The machined brackets came back and I was too anxious to install them as I needed to close this part of the project. Sorry, only took photos for the finished setup. I had to paint the grind out bits with high temp rust protecting paint and had new hand brake cables made for the new hand brake...
