I had the same problem, used a file in the panhard rod hole to clean it up and plenty of grease before pressing home in the vice. It was also difficult to get the end in the axle and had to open it up before whacking it in with persuader...

Give them 5 or 6 light coats should look good when finished. If you mess it up, just give them a rub with a scotch pad and another couple of coats...
