OK thanks - If i end up reverting it, I'll post some more info. It could well be a while, as I want to get it back on the road first, and then have a few other things to get sorted before I can start dismantling again :)

Thanks.... Would it be a timing chest and the gears? Anything else (apart from obviously belt, gaskets etc)

I found there was a bit of oil in the timing case. Any thoughts on them? I've not really found much information that suggests they're brilliant. It seems it has had a new timing case - is it an easy thing to go back to a belt if I need to?

So I've got my landy back together enough to turn engine over so I could undo the timing belt cover. I dont seem to have a timing belt on what I have always thought (and bought matching parts for) my 200tdi. What is this?

Have a look at a parts diagram, but on 200tdi at least i used nrc9595, that goes between the slave and a bracket, which the flexi goes through and up to the bracket on passenger footwell. it's then piping to the clutch master

No sense at all...I always dip the clutch.....it was something I started doing when I had an issue starting the landy and it was supposed to put less strain on the starter....pretty sure unless you've got it in gear it wouldn't make much difference . Unrelated my new corsa refuses to start...

They're ridiculously heavy. When I moved mine onto the new chassis, the rear axle was OK as the wheels stayed in a straight line, but the front I ended up taking off swivels and reassembling under the new chassis. It turned what could have been a 10 minute job Into a good few hours

I'm not sure whether the two are interchangable, I will see if I can pull it up on parts catalogue shortly. You did give me a fright though - my 200tdi is sat on my rebuilt defender missing those three parts, I just had to go out and check someone hadn't nicked it - luckily it's still there...

Indeed.....however the whole starter motor is now dead.....I may see if I can repair and keep as a spare, however for the time being I'm needing to get a replacement so I can get it back on the road and motd

Well turns out it lasted three years more ( though has been off road for the last year so that probably didn't help) I tried starting engine and just got a buzzing sound....took it off and it seems dead. The wheel seems seized. Any thoughts on replacements? eBay has bearmach at £92 and...

Also remember once you've got the gearbox off, you'll likely want to put it or another back on - that is where having the crane is the most help. Aligning the input into the clutch and getting it to go onto the studs without wrecking them would be very difficult without a crane. Unless of course...

Is there any fluid in the resevoir? Could a leak, it could be one or both of master / slave cylinder gone or even the clutch rod having punched through the clutch fork (though I think this would mean the clutch would not push down...)

Is it a factory 200tdi? If so, it should have the intake on the passenger wing. If it doesn't, where is it getting the air from? The snorkel raises where the engine gets the it's air from, so any snorkel you get will need to attach onto where the air comes from. If it's on the other wing, then...

Check for continuity between one of the earth bullets on a non working light and a known good earth. I imagine you'll find it is the issue.

What's the positive/negative pulse issue? What sort of unlock does the default alarm have? Mines a 200tdi so before any sort of alarm wizardry They certainly are short and to the point - i contacted them asking the differnce between the 240 (the one I got ) and the 280.....they just replied...

Indeed....I tested it inside and confirmed the way I had it the door things go out when you press unlock and down when you press lock. I've just checked mine and I have white as lock and brown as unlock. If once you've worked out where it goes for your alarm, I'd suggest making a temporary...
