    Replacement tailgate

The tailgate on my 1996 Defender 90 has finally rusted to bits and needs replacement. I've been quoted £900 to supply, paint, assemble and fit a brand new one, which cause instant pain in my wallet. So I'm trying to source a decent second-hand replacement. Does anyone have one for sale or can...

    Oil Cooler Hose O-Rings

Thanks for this. I've ordered the o-rings from Paddocks. The oil cooler is only a year old, so hopefully not sludged up yet (the oil light usually goes out on the starter alone, before the engine has fired). I suspect I over-tightened the union and chewed up the old o-ring in the process. I...

    Oil Cooler Hose O-Rings

Hi I've just discovered a pool of oil under my 300TDi Defender and have traced the leak to the union where the bottom oil hose is connected to the the oil cooler. Unscrewing the union revealed a shredded o-ring. I don't seem to be able to find a part number for this o-ring (Land Rover only...

    300TDi losing power

My Delphi pump arrived this morning, and much swearing the cursing later, it was successfully installed (the front bolt was almost impossible to get to because of the plumbing coming out of the injector pump). Unfortunately it made absolutely no difference to the power problem! However, when I...

    300TDi losing power

Thanks, guys. I've ordered a replacement Delphi lift pump for delivery tomorrow morning. Hopefully that (and the replacement filter) will solve the problem in time for me to head up to the Highlands on Sunday. Roger

    300TDi losing power

I'm hoping you can help me diagnose a problem with the 300TDi engine in my Defender 90 losing power. I have found I've needed to change down a gear when going up hills that it normally has no trouble with. But more significantly, I'm struggling to get it above 55mph in 5th gear. The engine runs...

    Trouble removing viscous fan coupling

Done it! Having tried very hard to force the nut undone by drifting it round with a hammer and cold chisel, I eventually gave up on this approach and decided to try and split the nut. I drilled a line of three holes on one of the flats, placed the chisel over the holes and then gave it several...

    Trouble removing viscous fan coupling

I've tried the punch and hammer trick but it didn't budge. I'm slightly concerned that the nut is starting to get mangled (it was slightly mangled before I started, which makes me think that someone had a go at this in the past). I'm starting to wonder whether I need to take an angle grinder...

    Trouble removing viscous fan coupling

Whilst replacing the radiator on my Defender 90, I discovered that there is loads of play in the viscous fan coupling, from which I deduced that the bearing is knackered. So I equipped myself with a decent 32mm fan spanner and a new viscous unit and set about replacing it. The only problem is...

Suspected broken front diff - help needed to confirm diagnosis

Thanks guys. I popped the rubber caps off and sure enough, one of the half shafts is turning. I'll replace both drive members as you suggest. Is there a likelihood that the splines on the shafts will be knackered too?

Suspected broken front diff - help needed to confirm diagnosis

Good point. As it happens, I was advised that the drive members were looking very tired when I had one of the wheelbearings replaced about 18 months ago. Are these relatively easy to get at to inspect/replace?

    A new noise

I had a similar problem a few months ago and suspected worn turbo charger bearings. However it turned out to be a blown head gasket. The noise got louder when I put my foot down because the gasses were being blown out at higher pressure and making a louder noise.

Suspected broken front diff - help needed to confirm diagnosis

I was pulling out up a slight gradient onto a roundabout on Thursday when there was a slight clunk followed by a gentle grinding noise. My Defender 90 went no further. I engaged the diff lock and managed to pull over, and after satisfying myself that there was no longer any drive to one of the...
