Wish I hadn't started this job!

Well, I'm glad it's not just me. The nut holding the central ball joint to my back axle is positioned so you can't get a socket on it, because the body of the axle is in the way. On mentioning this on Landyzone I was met with some scepticism, even from the late great James Martin, who'd worked...

I would just like to say

The Sweeney was my favourite of the police series when I was young because the others seemed rather insipid by comparison. Softly Softly and its successor, Barlow involved far to much talking for my liking. Z Cars seemed to be preoccupied with trivia. The Sweeney by contrast, generally began...

    White smoke on start up

Mine does this occasionally too. It's fine after the engine has been worked for a short while. If you manage to solve it come back and let us know. Another suggestion I've had from a mechanic who seemed to know a lot about Land Rovers and built competition vehicles in his spare time is that...

    High speed crank (logged)

Another thing that happens on TD5s is that the wiring loom between the accelerator pedal (or 'driver demand') and the ECU can deteriorate. This can show up as intermittent loss of revs and going into limp mode with the yellow engine light on. When this happened to me it was before I got my...

Defender 90 air constantly through air bleed.

Is that a TD5 I see in the picture? How are things at the fuel pressure regulator? Any sign of any leaks? Does it maintain fuel at the correct pressure? I suppose another place where fuel could get out and air in is the O ring seals around the injectors. In which case the oil level in the sump...

    High speed crank (logged)

OK then, that's the end of that idea. Is there any particular situation that tends to leave you with the error? In my case a run on the motorway was apt to give me a high speed crank error, whereas trundling to the shops at 30 mph wouldn't. Does it come up after high revving, for example?

    High speed crank (logged)

I've tended to find 'high speed crank error' to be associated with the crank sensor. The cheaper ones do this, I discovered by trial and error. I got a somewhat more expensive branded one (I think it was a Lucas from memory) a few years ago and it's been fine since. The wire from the crank...

    Td5 steering issue

Don't forget the universal joints in the steering column. They can deteriorate and feel funny sometimes. Unfortunately the spiders are not replaceable and you've got to buy the whole piece of the column. The panhard rod bushes can become loose and the steering mechanism merely moves the whole...

    Advice on bolt size

Yes, I was pretty sure they were metric, at least on the later models.

    Advice on bolt size

Yes, some of the Salisbury type axles had a separate piece that bolted on to receive the tapered pin of the ball joint. These were 10mm I think. But I'd try a few spare bolts to identify what fits and then buy some high tensile jobbies. It's got to push the whole land rover along, push it round...

    Oil leak around alternator

It only takes a few drops to make a mess, which is a very small amount compared to what you've got in the sump. On mine, the difference between the high and low marks on the dipstick is at least a litre, so with a small leak you wouldn't notice it.

    Defender - 2002 - engine noise

Another possibility is the exhaust fouling the chassis under load, where the torque reaction shifts the engine over a little. I had this on mine a few years ago after fitting a new exhaust. With everything stationary there was a gap, but you could see where the exhaust downpipe had been rubbing...

    Oil leak around alternator

I see @Anaconda's beaten me to it.

    Oil leak around alternator

I suppose, in addition to what I've mentioned above, there's a small compressor mounted at the front of the alternator that provides the suction for the brake servo. That has an oil supply, which might leak.

    Oil leak around alternator

There are not a whole lot of places near there where oil can come out. There's a pipe from the fuel pressure regulator that screws into the head just above the alternator. This is where fuel returns to the regulator after having been in the gallery in the head. There's also the rocker cover...

I would just like to say

Yes, I've had that with a flat screen too. It came on and showed a picture when it felt like it, which turned out to be less and less often as time went by. Whilst it's around 25 years since I've watched television, I use them as computer monitors, because it's the cheapest way of getting a...

Yup, moss is pretty good at breaking down the lithography. That's one of the reasons we have soil on the surface of the earth rather than just rock.

I would just like to say

Yes, it's looking a bit like frost damage to me too. Is this a side of the roof that's more apt to get cold in the winter? Attracting dew that then freezes, that sort of thing? Repeated thawing and freezing does a lot of damage to architectural baked goods. Whilst soot and other combustion...

I just thought I'd do something completely pointless for a few minutes. I have located Katie Price's Mucky Mansion on Google Earth. Because Google Earth allows you to see aerial photos from different dates (assuming that someone has taken them, and Google has bought and published them) you can...

I would just like to say

Well yes, I'm not expecting the insurance company to be any help. It's just so I'm doing things legally. Because I have a job, an address - I'm even on the electoral register - pay council tax and the like, I'm a sitting target when it comes to enforcement. If I were of no fixed abode, and...
