    Problem was, despite much application of plus gas et al, I still couldn't budge the hex bolts holding the egr on. Solution so far is I've blanked it at the end of the water cooler, which appears to be working if not ideal !

    All Just been informed that what I have is a Euro III EGR valve unit and the extra part is indeed a cooler for the gas coming from the exhaust to the inlet hose. It would seem the recognised answer is to take off the 2 water pipes and join them, then remove the EGR as normal.
