Mike, Look on the well known auction site for an 'apature collar' its usually listed in the land rover section, its a spacer the security cage passes through and gives you an extra 10mm depth .... which is just enough to get cables and connectors behind. Expect to pay about an 'Ayrton Senna'...

Hello, Luckily for me the security cage which came with the stereo has the fixing tabs down to about 20mm so i will be able to secure it in place. A friend of mine is has read your post and is going to use your method of fitting the stereo as opposed to mine. Thanks all for your help!!
