Thanks Mad Hat Man. My only thought was that as the diesel's older, there may be other issues that have been rectified in later models. I was quite attracted by the thought of owning a newer vehicle, but it seems as though the petrol's head gasket problems still exist in 2001 and later models :-/

Hello all. Just found this site via the wonders of a certain search engine - looks like it'll be really useful. I'm after a bit of newbie advice: thinking of buying a Freelander, with 6K to spend. I'm trying to decide between an '01 1.8 petrol, and a '98 2.0 diesel. Any thoughts, suggestions...
