thanks for replies, had not considered both bulbs going at same time as chances are remote - but will now check. have tried "bypassing" switch but it only brings sidelights on. time to get the avo out again...

had my 90 300tdi for 13 months and no problems. main headlamps don't work, only the sidelights. sidelights also go off in the main headlamp position. switch appears ok, fuses ok and i know lights work as main beam flash works. not aware that any relays involved nor does it go through igintion...
