    Tifor handle

I have a Tirfor TU-16 and i need a replacement handle for it. Does any one have a used handle they would like to sell? Or does any one know the dimensions of what handle should be? Perhaps i can make my own.

    300tdi engine in a 2.5td Chassis- Overheating

I did conversion of my 2.5TD to a 300tdi and had same problem with gauge and sender. You must use a 300tdi gauge with the 300tdi sender.

knocking from transfer box or diffs???

thanks for the replies. I think I will change only the drive flanges for now and see how that turns out. I guess i will also keep the 85W-140 oil in the diffs and transfer case, unless someone tells me otherwise. :) It was strange to me that the oil in the caps on the drive flanges was black...

knocking from transfer box or diffs???

Hi I recently overhauled the transfer gear box and the transmission, in the process changing the main shaft and the input gear. This made a huge difference in removing almost all of the slack i had in the drivetrain. However, there is a little bit of slack left and I know exactly why: the rear...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

I am here again posting about the virtues of the 300tdi versus the 19J. I have used my 300tdi for 2 years now without any problems, while in very harsh conditions in the Andes. Bad fuel, dusty gravel roads, high altitude, etc. Nevertheless, the 300tdi has performed as advertized. Always full of...

knocking from transfer box or diffs???

I need a little help diagnosing the source of a knocking sound and more importantly if it is a problem or not. 1989 Defender with about 400,000kms on it. New 300tdi motor and new R380 gearbox. The transfer box and the read diff is original. Front diff is a year old. Wheel hubs have all been...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

A letter to all those people with a 19J...get rid of it. I was a doubter of the 200tdi and 300tdi until i installed a 300tdi last week in my defender. I also installed the R380 gearbox. My Defender is like a completely different machine. top speed used to by 90kms, now it is 150kms. i used to...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

well i made the hard decision and yanked out my 2.5TD and installed a 300tdi. That is the only type of motor available here in Brasil where i am now. The mechanics were unable to mate the 300tdi motor with my LT77 gear box. Well, that is not exactly true, we mated it, but there wasn't any space...

    motor blew up

Well i didn't make it very far with my newly rebuilt engine. The head gasket was leaking after 1500kms and pressurizing the coolant system. I pulled off the head and to my surprise the mechanics who rebuilt the engine installed 2 OEM gaskets instead of one!! no surprise that it was leaking...

    motor blew up

I measured the valves and pistons protrusion myself and a 1mm gasket fits fine, but i think the mechanics wanted to put two gaskets on it to keep the escape gas temps low and the temps in the head low. This engine runs quite cool now. In fact when the outside temp is 15C, the temp gauge is...

    motor blew up

Update on my engine...The problem of overheating has been solved. The cause? 1) the mechanics had planed the head improperly and it was irregular!! This was causing compression gas escaping into the coolant system and forcing my coolant to become pressurized. When the coolant was pressurized...

    motor blew up

I don't know exactly why the mechanics here are telling me i have too much compresion with an OEM gasket (they never tested the compression with the OEM gasket installed), as i can't understand portuguese very well. I know from talking to RIchard Turner that too much compression is impossible...

    motor blew up

I agree that the thickness of the head gasket is a function of the piston protrusion and the valve recess. I measured both myself and the 1mm OEM gasket suffices...but i have got 'expert' opinion for two mechanics that have overhauled my engine the past 2 months that i require a 2.2mm gasket to...

    motor blew up

The operating conditions here are hilly and very hot (35C). The thermostat is a 74C model from LR. We ran the engine for about 1 hour at idle before taking it on the highway. After the 1mm OEM gasket blew out (and engine overheated in the process), we installed a 2.2mm custom gasket and went...

    motor blew up

Well, i have another head gasket problem...i installed the 1mm elring head gasket yesterday, and today it blew out. The engine was running warm the whole time. I am very curious why the engine is running warm..it is climbing hills....we used a heat gun on it and the temps were all in the normal...

    motor blew up

Update: Reinstalled the motor today in my Defender. Just to recap, it has new: camshaft, lifters, tappets, tappet guides, main bearings, oil pump gears, exhaust valves, gaskets, oil, turbo core. When we got to installing the cylinder head, i decided to do an experiment and try with an OEM...

    motor blew up

I do have 4 OEM gaskets, all of which came from England. That is not the issue. As for the rest of the parts, almost all of them also came from England - but as luggage on the plane. To import parts here via courier or to buy parts here from a LR representative is insane as it costs about 5x...

    motor blew up

The head gasket issue is complicated. I have 4 factory OEM gaskets in my spare parts kit (all are Elring brand). They are all 1mm thick. The mechanic who did the overhaul in Argentina told me that with the OEM gasket i had too much compression so he got a custom gasket built for me. That...

    motor blew up

The cylinder head is not cracked. The reason the head gasket blew because it is thick and not reinforced between the cylinders.
