    Impossible gearbox/transfer box whirring...

Hi I am going to take out the input gear next weekend and see what it looks like. I'll run it with the gear out and see how it sounds. Henry

    Impossible gearbox/transfer box whirring...

Hi It was already making the noise before the new gearbox went in - the gearbox had other issues (syncro not effective) so I thought I would change it - I thought it might also cure the noise issue - but that would have been far to easy.....! Henry

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Hi I am going to check out the alloys as I don't want them falling off - but that really can't be the cause of the judder problem - as it did it even when I had steel wheels on (and the bigger tyres). My gut feeling is that the bigger tyres made an existing issue more apparent. Henry

    Impossible gearbox/transfer box whirring...

Hi The release bearings were certainly done - so we can rule them out. I know it is not the wheels/prop shaft etc, as it does it when the transfer box is in neutral - so the propshafts, diffs, output flanges, wheels etc are not turning. I think it is the input gear - it's the only thing...

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Hi I have the standard alloys fitted to every 300TDi Disco I ever see - you can probably see them in my avatar. Henry

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

OK - that could be a problem! The alloy nuts went on easily though and when you spin the wheel, nothing seems to be 'connecting'. I'll check the studs tomorrow. Henry

    Radiator Muff

Hi I would have thought with an efficient thermostat you wouldn't need one. The heater should blow out hot air - I find the air coming from my one can actually make me too too warm so I have to turn it down - even when it is sub-zero. See this for other ways to improve the heater...

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Thanks, I'll add this to the possibles then.

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Hi I can probably rule out the bucked alloy - as one of my combinations was a steel with 7.50r16 on it and the other side steel with 235x85 - so no alloys involved. This did seem to reduce it a little (and I know that having different sized tyres on the same axle is not good - I gave the diff...

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

I thought that - but I changed them both - so I would have to have two bucked alloys. AND - I also tried with one side with a steel 7.50 on it and the other side with a steel 235x85 on it - okay, not the best to drive with, but okay for a quick test. i found this combination didn't cure the...

They both did it from brand new......if that makes a difference. H.

    extreme power loss

Hi Are you getting much extra exhaust smoke? I had an issue with my land rover a couple of years ago. I lost power when driving along the M5 - dropped down to around 20MPH top speed - which was an issue! I checked the air filter - fine - and did all of the basics. Eventually I noticed...

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Hi Yes, the tyres are brand new - and I thought balance as well - so I got them balanced. Swapping both front - rear makes no difference. It seems that putting the bigger/wider tyres on and/or alloys is causing the issue (or revealing it). Henry

    Impossible gearbox/transfer box whirring...

Yes, new clutch (and associated bearings). The clutch operation makes no difference to the noise. Clutch in, clutch out - it just wines. Henry

    Hotter Heater

I got cold last winter - so I decided to do something about it. My 1989 110 has a 300TDi engine - but the original heater. After making my alterations I now find the heater HOT and actually have to turn it down. And yes, I get air coming in round the doors and through the badly fitting air...

    Impossible gearbox/transfer box whirring...

Hi I know that Land Rover gearboxes like to make a little noise - but my one is really going to far. The best discretion is the noise you get when reversing hard in some cars - that whirring noise. It kicks in at 25MPH and then gets louder and louder. You can also recreate it by putting...

New Tyres and alloys - wheel judder?

Hi Bit of a strange one here. I recently bought a second hand set of alloys (Disco Mk 1) for my 1989 Defender TD (with 300TDi engine - if that makes any difference!). I put some Colway 235x85 R 16s on - before it has 7.50r16 tyres - so the new ones were slightly bigger. After fitting...

    Folding Rear seats

Hi Carl I fitted 4 folding seats to my 88 a few years ago. It's bolts back and bottom, which can be done by yourself using a mole wrench (mole wrench on the top - it turns until it hits the body then stops...!). However, much easier if you can get Lucy to do it! Failing that bring it down the...
