Hippo and all Thanks for the interest and support. COOLANT Yes it is under warranty and is back at the mechanics now. He is checking for obvious leaks etc. We did check the oil dipstick straight away and confirmed no "milkly appearance". That seemed to satisfy him that coolant was not leaking...

Fair comment! However I am determined to give this vehicle one last go. It does drive and hanlde very well. So I am still open to ideas.

All Our Freelander is 2003, 65K miles. My mechanic believes my head gasket has gone. He reports milky oil and I have seen some of the so called mayonaise build up under the oil filler cap. I am loosing about 2 pints of coolant every 20 miles and there are no signs of leaks around...

Thanks for comments on brakes. Will open the drum and look inside. I hope this is the culprit it sounds alot less expensive than other possibilities. However, if brake is sticking why would it allow wheel to move at all? As I mentioned it moves for partial revolution and then seizes up...

I am used to changing pads on caliper brakes..not shoes on drum brakes. Is there a basic procedure for Freelanders or at least a few tips on what to do. Thanks R
