What is the 'pump' timing, has it to do with the timing belt????????

My 1992 200tdi was serviced a fews weeks ago and a new timing belt fitted. it was going fine, but now at about 40 - 50 mph the engine seems to be working really hard - increased noise and vibration, as if the engine is struggling a bit when I put the foot down. Any ideas?
