Its part if the injector pump, I think its called the distributor pump. Its not a solanoid, its just a valve called the stop lever, (see SII_ROM diagram 19-1 part 6). In the cab it looks like an old choke that you pull. There is a cable between the two which looks like the throttle cable.

As not many comment on diesels Ill chip in, Im no expert and this may be a bit obvious but check that the engine kill isnt engaged (down position). When I bought my 2a diesel the kill cable had slipped and stayed engaged even when you pushed the knob in. Poor guy selling stripped everything down...

Thanks, it figures that I may have a III engine, it was originally a petrol. But the center of the filter is too wide to catch the spring, its an inch acorss and the spring is 1/2 inch. The one I removed was the same but do I need another filter?

Just to update you all, I emptied the transfer box oil then removed the 2 screws of the outer retainer although the top one only loosened. With it out the way there was enough broken cable left to pluck it out. New cable works a treat, happy wife. Not all plain sailing, how do you refill the...
