Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

Having read through all the replies I can appreciate that the Range Rover and previous 88 and 110 Land Rovers I have owned since the late 1970’s have now reached a point where they are in some sort of worship zone way beyond the purpose for which they were invented. I understand there is a group...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

In which case I am surprised no one has retrospectively fitted a manual box. In the days when I owned the Mk 1 1971 Range Rover I knew quite a few who had replaced the petrol engine with a Perkins diesel. I guess the problem with such mods these days is getting the computer to accept such mods...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

Nice to hear something positive Sean. I prefer automatic gearboxes as there is less to go wrong however the L322 seems to have a history of gearbox faults so I guess a manual is better? From what I read a poor battery will cause all sorts of computer faults. I guess any L322 that has a long...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

You are correct. My P38 expired six years ago and had reached the stage like any 20 years plus car of not being worth the cost of repair. That model is very long in the tooth and mine was showing serious signs of corrosion.I rather hoped owners would be a lot more positive in suggesting it was...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

The original Range Rover was designed as a more comfortable version of the Land Rover and came with easy to clean plastic seats and rubber mats instead of the modern interior. Over the years it appears to have become a Chelsea tractor and sadly in the evolutionary process became so complicated...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

I have owned three Range Rovers over the last 30 years. First was a two door which had the dropped doors because of the hinges, plastic interior rusted tailgate and a roof that someone had sat on. That was an easy replacement as it was bolted on. Then came a classic and followed by a P38. When...

Thinking of Buying 2003-2009 Diesel Range Rover

I have not been on here for a while since my P38 expired after ten years of trusty service. However I now want another Range Rover for no more than £5.5k. No blacked out windows or something that looks like its doing something naughty in the suburbs. Diesel and nothing complicated. What should I...

Buying a 2003 to 2012 RR. Which one is best?

I dread to think what your engine and gearbox nightmare cost.

Buying a 2003 to 2012 RR. Which one is best?

So by the sound of things all the horror stories are true. Maybe I should abandon the idea and go for a Volvo XC90? I forgot to mention I live in rural Norfolk so I need a 4x4. I owned one of the early two door RR, a classic and a P38. All were pretty reliable apart from the door hinges on my...

Buying a 2003 to 2012 RR. Which one is best?

My problem with the P38 is I had one for ten years and as well as being old it now looks dated. I see lots of RR’s in my price range but from what you all are suggesting they are unreliable money pits?

Buying a 2003 to 2012 RR. Which one is best?

I was thinking diesel because of the miles per gallon and mileage I got from my P38 over a decade. I scrapped it at 245,000 miles but it had got so worn out and tatty. The big petrol engines in RR seem to guzzle money compare to diesels. I went through all the air bag/ suspension problems on...

Buying a 2003 to 2012 RR. Which one is best?

As a former P38 owner which died a couple of years ago I now miss the RR comfort and want to buy another. I hate the Chelsea Tractor style and also worry about the issues surrounding the later technology. My budget is up to £8k so the question is what can I get for that money and more...

    I don't have a ramp or a pit!

    Oil!

Blimey:scratching_chin:At that rate I'd be changing my oil every six weeks. Not cheap when you have to pay for the oil, filter and labour at £45.00 an hour.

    Oil!

14 quid a can! I've got a P38 2.5 DSE and as you may have read on another thread I have a tappet problem. I wonder if oil was my undoing here:confused: When cold the engine sound OK but when it warms up the tappet is really noisy.

    Oil!

I've been a bit of a cheapskate over the years buying only cheap oil and changing it infrequently. Have I made a big mistake or is there a big difference in all those oilson display in the motor spares shop? And what about the additives. Does STP or the others give their value back in improved...

    2.5 DSE Camshaft replacement?

Thanks for all the replies. A couple of people have suggested it is a hydraulic tappet problem. What do you call cheap oil? I changed the oil and filter 6,000 miles ago and refilled with Halfords diesel oil. Would this be better? or what about this? I am a bit confused by oil. Surely it is...
