Thanks for that info, seems like you have hit the nail on the head! no check engine lamp, so wher do I go from here?...is it a reset job or a wiring / hardware issue

My 4.0 Range Rover was running fine, one morning it would not turn over, plenty of power in the battery, recylced the central locking in case the inhibitor had kicked in, nothing, disconected and re-connected the battery, still nothing, on a remote power supply to the starter the engine turns...
