Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

Very interesting, Nodge... that could be the case. If so, then the problem is still mislabling of the axles, and then that mistake making it into the ads... because they are selling them as if for the automatic, gasoline, and 3.2 six cylinder engines. Well, they don't specify an auto/manual...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

Thanks, Grumpy... your assessment of this strange saga, so far, seems right on the money. And like you, I look forward to seeing what the answer is... and more importantly, is there ANYONE who sells the correct axle for 2008 to 2011/12 LR2's? But that will be from the sidelines, because I had...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

I just got off the phone with the parts guy at the US distributor of PDL Professional Driveline Axles, and gave him the part number on the box their axle comes in: 1700-684725. I was actually surprised when he looked it up, and told me it was for "2008 to 2013 Land Rover LR2's". So either I AM...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

OK... I may have a clue here: I've noticed that some sellers list these axles as for 2008-2012, or 2008-2011. Then others list them as up to a range of 2006-2015. But axles after 2011/12, to 2015, are for different engine combinations... although I think they have the same, or similar, Aisan...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

Thanks, Artic, but they don't show the dimension that I am looking for, and have found on the US Autozone site. That is the 19 13/16" length, from the inner end of the axle to the face of the bearing. But I would imagine it is the same as that, and as mine. I've bounced this problem around in...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Baffling (to me!) front Half-shaft/Axle Length Mystery! Too short, twice???

This is on my 2009 LR2. I bought a replacement halfshaft/axle for the right front. But when I went to replace it, it would not go far enough into the support bearing clamp... the one which is integral with the rear right motor mount. The cap will not go on, as the bearing is too far to the...

    Freelander 2 Power Steering Fluid

Makes sense. A can of the 202 is like $26 at Autozone, and it there will be no question or worry. So I'll do that. I was just asking in case it was known to be OK to use the 11s. Thanks... Rich.

    Freelander 2 Power Steering Fluid

Hi all: I also have a 2009 LR2, and a can of Pensosin CHF 11s (for some reason). And I've seen the recommendation for the CHF 202 in the manual, and online, and have used that in the past to top up my PS unit... which I replaced a few years ago with a junkyard unit, and needed it for that. But...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Well for the sake of completeness, I wanted to give a wrap up on everything I did... I finished putting my LR2 back together on the 22nd of April, which was almost exactly a month after getting it towed into the driveway. The reason it took so long was waiting to get parts, going to get parts...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Well as I said to Grumpy, the rated depth of immersion for the LR2 is about 20 inches. The sills on my LR2 are about 21 to 21.5 inches off the ground, so when the water came in last fall, I was pushing it past the rated height. But even at the 20" mark, the Haldex/Diff, driveshaft, starter...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Thanks Grumpy... "enthralling" at this end, too! It really is "all good", as bad as it is. I've always loved working on cars... while fraught with inconvenience, cost, and sometimes blood and tears... there is still something satisfying about it. I've been working on cars since I tuned up the...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

A small update, for anyone who might be curious: I've been working on my LR2 for the last week or so, but bad weather slowed me down a bit. Nonetheless I did pick up a transfer case, and today finally took out the old one. I got a great deal on the "new" PTU. It was in a junkyard an hour and...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Thanks much, Nodge! Everything you say makes perfect sense, and certainly fits what has happened, and what I have observed. I confess that this is of course my own fault, as I did neglect the PTU. Nobody gets away with this, and I am no exception. I did renew the diff oil two years ago... how...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Hi Grumpy! All true, and as the "smoke clears", it seems more like this is the proper path for me. If I replace it, at worst it will be about a $350/one day mistake (PTU's are luckily far less expensive than the diff units). If I don't, then whatever happened up there is sure to happen again. It...

Freelander 2 (LR2) Trouble Diagnosing Drivetrain Issue

Hi all, and thank you for approving my registration to your forums. I have a perplexing (to me) issue, and thought this would be a great forum to ask about it. One reason is because of Nodge68, and the excellent post, with pictures, about replacing the Haldex/Diff unit...
