Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

Cheers for the tools tips, guys - I've Googled "Whitworth" so that tells you where I'm starting from! I'll see what I've got that fits/doesn't when the car arrives in a week or two (it's having an MOT and some minor electrical fixes first) but I imagine I'll need a new set of spanners. The...

Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

Thanks, Stanley - I think I'll be asking plenty of questions here! I've got a socket set and some bits and bobs (battery charger, jack, axle stands, etc) so that should be enough for now - apart from the headtorch! Thanks for taking the time to reply and to share your experience - it's very...

Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

I'm starting to put together a list of things that need doing... So far, I've got soundproofing, bit of rust removal and painting underneath, etc. What do you guys recommend now that you've seen it? (I'll probably need to start with the easy things but it'd be good to know what to start reading...

Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

Right folks, now, I know that I don't need to worry, I've bought my first Land Rover and am officially "one of you!" My current mechanical level is 0.1 (only able to change a wheel) so please be prepared for plenty of questions on how to do glaringly simple things!

Cheers, Turboman. Techniques for getting the best results (gear changes, etc, etc) are exactly the kind of thing I need to learn.

Hi marjon, thanks for that. I'm not sure I wanted objective feedback ;) I really like this style of car but it's been decades since I was in something old and have forgotten a lot. And I had no experience of Land Rovers so that didn't help!

Hi saxavordian, Turboman, Wildefalcon, Colthebrummie, Disco1BFG, Bobsticle, tottot and CohPC, Many thanks for taking the time to help me out. After reading your feedback it seems that everything I was concerned about is actually normal with an old Land Rover - I just lacked the frame of...

Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

Hi Colthebrummie, I didn't have chance to get up to that speed but it was already pretty loud (revs/engine) at 45 - I get the feeling it could gradually get up to a better speed but there wasn't much acceleration in it. I'm wondering if it needs an overdrive or something to get it to a more...

Ahhh, thanks for that saxavordian - so the gear thing is normal, then. You're right about the noise - there could be benefits! ;) It's been really well looked after - it's actually owned by a garage and I know they do really good work and have changed all the fluids, etc. Everything under the...

Need help re: 1972 Land Rover Series III!

Hi, For the first time in about 30 years I've got some "me time" and so I've decided to learn mechanics! I thought I'd start with an old Land Rover because A. they're cool and B. they aren't full of complicated computers (I'm going to have enough on my plate trying to learn mechanics!)...
