Would that be from JLR or Gaydon?

Has anyone been to Gaydon and physically searched and looked through records there? Maybe worth a shot!

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

I've contacted HMRC several times with full information about its re-import in 2001 and no matter how I have worded the information to them, they don't seem to be able to understand that I'm look for historic information and not trying to bring in a vehicle 'today'. They also keep sending me...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

It was brought to the mainland pre NOVA s maybe the rules were slightly different and there wouldn’t have been the same level of computer input in 2001.

I’d be quite happy to look through all the records at Gaydon myself if I could find its original VIN. There can’t have been many Coniston Green Defenders on the RHD Export line at Solihull at that time. The 11L engine number either side should narrow it down. Any help with that one?

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

Fortunately for me in the information supplied of copies of microfilm records held by the DVLA, it clearly refers to and confirms that import / re-import documentation and bill of sale / purchase were provided to Worcester DVLA Office. The actual forms are not with the bundle sent by DVLA...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

As it cam from the Channel Islands as an 'import' and although it is a bizarre term and use of language.... Disco is correct. It is a re-import by virtue of the fact it was manufactured in the UK, sent overseas for 'export' and then brought back into the UK. Hence the term re-import. Sounds...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

Once on a Q its always a Q unless additional information as to the age of the vehicle is provided to the DVLA to prove its age. So an age related or any type of 'private' plate cannot be assigned to a Q Plated vehicle. Reading through masses of posts, information and DVLA guidelines on Q...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

That’s a scarey thought.... although I’d think the VAT/tax liability would be with the original importer, who’s now deceased. I don’t think even the VAT could extract cash from him from beyond the grave... But then again, we all know how our friendly HMRC and VAT officials can make it fit...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

I’d never considered that, however, it does make a lot of sense. Save a shed load of cash on VAT/duty and not be bothered about the Q plate. A nice tidy Defender that had done very little mileage on Jersey for 7 or 8 years....

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

The LR VIN should start SAL. SABT is a DVLA issue one, following its examination at DVLA Worcester in 2001. On the V5 it says date of manufacture unknown. First registered October 2001. Also a note saying Imported Vehicle. No VAT, never thought of that as a reason, but a very plausible one.

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

Nelly, No idea. It is most definitely a 200TDI from circa 1994. Built new and sent to the Channel Islands. It was then imported from Jersey in 2001, when it was first registered with DVLA on the mainland as age unknown. It then had a check at DVLA Worcester (Office now shut) and given a new...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

The old VIN has been well and truley obliterated. Acid isn’t going lift it. I can see why they removed it, so as not to cause confusion with a new VIN number. I just don’t understand why it wasn’t simply brought in from Jersey and registered in a normal way. Unfortunately the chap who...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

I've had it quite a while now and the Q didn't really bother me. (Appropriate price paid from a reputable seller). It's type approved and genuine. From research, I personally think it was a mess up or bad advise when first registering it in 2001. No idea why they obliterated the original SAL...

I'd like to get an age plate the honest way, but that lot in Swansea are so difficult to deal with that it makes you wonder which way to go. I get one chap who was extremely helpful, then the next suggested I'd stolen a Defender to build this one! The old SAL VIN doesn't seem to be on the...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

Hi Rougharse.... Totally agree with you there, however, with all the information to date about it starting it’s life in Jersey and being exactly the same vehicle that left the LR plant in 1994 that was returned, imported and registered on the mainland in 2001, there must be some way of tracing...

Year stamp on chassis rails?! I’ve not heard of those...... googling now. If you can assist with where I may find them please. Also if I find axle numbers, gear box numbers, should that bring me any additional information as to the original chassis number?

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

I presume the old SAL VIN went when the new SAB VIN was issued. I don’t know as I didn’t own it in 2001. It’s been registered in UK since 2001 gets MOT’d and is a straight motor. It just appears that whoever registered it either wanted to hide its true age or messed the paperwork up when...

    1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

The problem is that I’m dealing with people behind desks and on computers who offer little practical help or will go the extra mile to assist me. It’s all in the too difficult to do tray. They must have records of the initial application to register it in UK, but all I get is: “If you give us...
