Update on getting the speedo housing out, it was a nightmare. Tried pliers, penetrating oil for a week,wood chisel, cold welding threaded bar and slide hammer. It did not move at all. Resorted to welding 19mm nut to the end and threaded bar. Got the breaker bar on it. It snapped the weld 5...

Hi, I’m trying to change the speedo gear in the transfer box. I can’t remove the flange from the casing, any ideas

Thanks for the feedback, changed the flange, oil seal, bearing and mud guard and it’s fine now

I agree, I’ve greased them up tonight. The defender has only done 500 miles in the 10 years

Should this be tight on the shaft?

I checked play in the universal joints and they looked ok. I drove it today and it dca more rattling noise with loud clicks. When I was checking the universal joint there is metal ring where the shaft going in to the transfer box. This ring is loose and moved in and out by 5-7 mm. See photo

thanks for the replies, I didn’t notice it getting worse on corners. I was on the motorway when it started. I pulled off and got a mate to pick me up with a trailer. I will check it tonight. Is it easier enough to grease the cv joint?

hi, my defender 90 300tdi has developed a fault on the lights. When I switch it to the side lights the main head lights come on, but not as bright as normal. When I pit the main lights on all the lights go off, included the dashboard lights. Any ideas on the cause? Regards Andrew
