That doesn't sound too bad. I am in the Highlands so will have to do something like that short term anyway. It goes back together this afternoon until I can work out what's best to do!

My conclusion also. The UJ was seized on the shaft but slides nicely now. The securing bolt in the UJ slides in a groove parallel to the shaft so if the bolt was not removed, it would not slide the whole way. So someone has had it to bits before!

It is reassuing that the UJ vibration can occur with minor play and any speed range. Well, the prop shaft will be coming off tomorrow regardless. That seems to be the obvious place to start. What would the symptoms be for transfer box bearing failure?

I think the vibration would then be there at all speeds, wouldn't it? The MOT guy did jack it up on the ramp and turn wheels but no mention of hand brake binding.
