Ive based my mpg on just £10 i put in the other day and the beast hasn't been used for ages properly so it may get better as i drive it more as the battery has been poor after a week possibly 2 of not driving it, maybe the ecu has to self learn again not quite sure but it does seem to get better...

Really i think that the temp sensor maybe on its last legs as the car starts on the button from freezing cold ...well since i changed the glow plugs on saturday ! Any other reasons why my mpg is rubbish ?

My L series does about 60 miles on £10 so that would be bang on 30 mpg with diesel being at £1 a litre at the moment

I've found I'm suffering a little loss in performance as the turbo does not hit as much as it used to but still boosts to around 18psi so I'm wondering if the pump timing is moving off gradually as the starting performance is slowly getting worse suppose its trail and error now

You may be getting air into the pump causing more noise than usual can you move the pump when engine is running to let all air out highest point being the fuel pipe ?

Could be an air leak or may need the glow plugs changed if not already done as if not tip top you get more smoke than usual
