    Looking for me first defender!help

Don't bother looking at TD5's if your budget is 5K. As above, look at 300tdi's or even tidy 200's. Either do a lot of research or take a friend along who knows Land Rovers, as there is a huge amount to look for when buying. Take your time, and don't fall in love with the first one you see!

    V8 or TD5

Hi, A few of my mates have the TD5 disco's, and to me, are fairly brisk cars if you get a wiggle on. If you have a post-2001 (I think) with reasonably low mileage, you'll have the option for a re-map. So you can get the best of both worlds - a quick car with good mpg. TD5 gets my vote, even...

    Bought it! 90 TD5

Glad you picked a good one up! I would probably look at steering and diff guards, as well as some off-road biased tyres if thats what your wanting to do. Standard defenders are more than capable on a lot of terrain, it depends how serious you want to get!

Looking at a defender - tips

Chassis, rear cross member, bulkhead - check for rot/dodgy repairs. Take a tack hammer with you and tap around the underside for rust.

Defender pedal position compared to a series 3?

Throttle is further back in the footwell than the clutch and brake I believe, works quite well.
