My rule with tools is to get the best I can afford at the time - they generally last longer. Other than that, they're much the same design wise.

Make sure they're clean - can 'detect' from moisture or muck in my experience (mainly with BMWs at work). Sometimes they don't work well in the wet - you have to do it the old fashioned way then!

I got the new General Grabber ATs fitted on mine and they seem superb so far. Great in the wet, and on the light 'greenlane' type routes I sometimes take. Cheaper than BFGs too, and should cope with anything you throw at them. Only done 500 miles on them, so not much more to report. Hasn't...

My father in law had this problem in a motor of his. He replaced the pipe, but before fitting he put a section of thicker pipe over the rubbing section as a shield. As a disclaimer, I think it may have been a turbo vacuum pipe in a Passat - may not apply in this case.
