Can i replace reg/rec/diode or easier tp get a used alternator?

Know this may be a dumb question but ive never seen anything over like 14.5volts before. Have had alternator light stay on for about 30seconds after starting then going off. When ever i get a volt meter on it light goes off (typical) but its reading just under 17volts and its a brand new...

Previous owner advised me as to rear axle being weak, got a set of discovery axles so will get them on asap. Got some 33" MT tyres and will need to do the suspension as its sitting pretty low not very far off whats left of the bump stops
