    auto or manual diesel p38?

I have a manual. I have done 000's of miles towing heavy trailers, e.g. I recently towed a mini digger back from the UK to France (about 2.2 tonnes total). The manual box option is fine. I have fitted a PSI power box to mine and it helps a lot with the throttle response, but you still need to...

Help needed please - p38 diagnostics

What procedure are you using to put the EKA in? On my 95 DT, it never accepts it the first time, and always accepts it the second time. So it might be worth trying this sequence, in case your car is the same: - lock car with key - enter EKA code - when you then turn key to unlock, it won't...

    Datatek

One of the best things I have read on this forum :-) And I agree - my friends 2005 Mitsubishi Shogun is of course much more reliable than my 1995 P38, but the engine in noisy, it is cramped, the ride is awful, and most importantly of all, the interior is just nowhere near as nice a place to...

    Datatek

This is an excellent example of why I am apprehensive about changing my P38 for a L322. I like to pretend I am immune to nonsense about cars having an 'image' and will always buy on technical merit, but..........

    Where to after the P38?

Good point, but not sure how well the XJR will cope with the horse trailer, especially off road..........keep the suggestions coming though :-) Anybody tried an ML Merc for example? Any good?? Wildcard option - LHD is a bonus - something imported from the US perhaps? Lincoln Navigator...

    Where to after the P38?

Keith is right, DIY is the only option for us over here. If the L322 is impossibly hard to work on (as a benchmark; I have found the P38 to be one of the easiest vehicles I have ever had to work on, but it is a basic manual gearbox DT!) then that rules it out. Usually it is needing loads of...

    Where to after the P38?

Thanks Saint this is exactly the sort of info I was hoping for - thought the mpg might be a bit closer to 20 though, what sort of driving gives you 15 (I know that lpg mpg will be lower than petrol)? Any other input re the BMW V8s? I know reliability is a key factor but it is not the only...

    Where to after the P38?

Hi all just interested to hear your thoughts on something I have been mulling over for a while... ...my P38, although it's had some issues, has in the 18 months I have owned it so far been great. The hassle compared with some Jap alternatives more than outweighed by its sheer competence as...

    over heating at speed

how can it be the fan if the car overheats at speed? Fans do nothing once the car is moving at more than 20ish mph..... Pump and rad both new The only thing I can think of is that the new thermostat is not working properly (did you test it as there are lots of reports on here of faulty new...

That old BMW lump isn't so bad...

Just got back from a bit of a tour this weekend, Dordogne to Caen then Portsmouth to Teignmouth, then Teignmouth to Norwich, then (now with horse trailer attached) back to Dordogne! About 2,500km all told. P38 didn't miss a beat. 27.5 mpg without the trailer (cruising 75ish), 19.5 with...

    Draining water from sill?

Sorry about the thread resurrection! I have the same issue just started with my car, it hasnt rained for ages so I dont think it is anything to do with sunroof drains. The overflow from the header tank is bone dry and the water level not dropping so I dont think it is coolant. Any suggestions...

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

Remember i am talking about the transfer box not main gearbox... It's not black or sludgy, still clear in fact. Looks like the GL-5 compliant stuff I put in the diffs. Good idea re the drain down and refill. Back to the original point of this thread - yet again i am indebted to Datatek...

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

The plot thickens (no pun intended!).... just drained the transfer box and what came out is more like gear oil than ATF, i.e. brown not red and thicker/smelly like gear oil always is.... I will replace with the correct ATF of course, but could somebody have tried to mask a problem in the past by...

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

Getting Dexron III ATF not a problem but right now all I have available to put in the gearbox is either the Dexron III or GL-5 gearbox/diff oil. Reading this thread (and others around the net!) I am confused about which would be better to top up the gearbox, I will do a full gearbox oil change...

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

My copy of RAVE for 2000 model year states MTF 94 for the manual gearbox, and ATF Dexron III for the transfer box. Not sure where the above scan is from.... Having said that, anybody got any idea what spec MTF 94 is?? Cheers Jerry ps I haven't put anything in it yet...... but am keen to top...

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

Keith - that is a superb idea! Off to the garden centre I go........ Do you happen to know if the transfer box filler is similarly awkward? If so I guess I need two sprayers one for ATF the other for gearbox oil..... Cheers Jerry

Crafty solutions for getting oil into gearbox and transfer box...

Hi all, need to check and maybe top up the oil in my transfer box and manual gearbox. The filler for the gearbox is hard to get to - I need to somehow squirt the oil into it - are there any crafty tools or homebrew solutions for doing this? Cheers Jerry

    2.5 diesel MPG

Mine is a manual, averages 25mpg mainly A/B road driving usually with a bit of towing thrown in, will do high 20s on a run, never quite made it to 30mpg.... I am firmly of the opinion having seen other similar threads on here that the fuel saving from choosing a manual is negligible HTH...
