    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

Guess I'll be buying a sparky friend a pint then whilst he educates me on how to use his ammeter :)

    No 4WD!

Had a lovely lay down in the slush this morning and the propshaft is there and appears to look sound to a simple inspection. I need the car for the next couple of days but after Christmas I will get it up again and check the half shafts (I guess I'd get those out to remove the diff anyway so if...

    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

I'll give the solar a wide birth then. Guess if I got stuck remotely I'd be better off keeping a starter handle with the vehicle and starting that way. I've not used an ammeter before but just Googled so thanks for the pointer. I have a multimeter which I'm thinking may do the job??

    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

Keymeister - Ah well, I didn't fully explain the other strange stuff that happened. I put the other battery in (which had stood unused for 12 months) and the car wouldn't start (turned over but wouldn't fire). Very quickly the new (not actually new but new to my car) battery wasn't providing...

    No 4WD!

Oxides, not a stupid question at all. When I'm involved you are right to assume nothing :) The hubs are definitely 'fixed' and working (had front assembly off and watched the pins lock in fixing the wheel to the half shaft). I will check that I can locate the propshaft in the morning...

    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

So I got another battery from a friends unused swb. Fitted and seems to be charging well from the alternator (over 14v) and holding the charge more than my previous battery 12.5v and possibly more since I haven't given it a proper run yet. What I have been doing is disconnecting the battery...

    No 4WD!

Right, I jacked both front wheels up and both span freely and completely independently of each other so am I to presume that my diff is shot? A while back there was a funny clunking noise from that I couldn't put my finger on that subsequently disappeared as suddenly as it arrived. I'm now...

    No 4WD!

In case anyone else is struggling the other thread is here: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f6/series-2s-4-wheel-drive-problems-125505.html My course of action then is: 1. Jack up both front wheels and check diff is working by rotating one and ensuring the other travels in opposite direction...

    No 4WD!

Yep, I have MAP freewheeling hubs and they switch to 'Fixed' as they should. I have owned the car 6 months and sol far not checked any of the oil in the diffs/transmission. Mainly because I don't know how many bits there are to check. I was thinking of doing this soon as the front adn rear...

    No 4WD!

Hello All, Firstly, all levers seem to engage/disengage correctly. That is I can drive all 5 gears in 2WD and 4WD in High and all 5 in Low. However, I don't seem to get any power going to the front axle when in 4WD High or Low. I say this as I can easily donut with rear wheels spinning in...

    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

Thanks Oxides, as helpful as ever. I'll try a borrowed battery tomorrow and see if it helps. The one in there is only a year or so old. Does it sound normal that my shorting it with the screwdriver has created all these issues? Prior to that incident I had not had any battery/starting...

    Africa 2012

Andrew, My plans are to sell up and downsize to all but essentials in Jan/Feb 2011. I intend to live entirely out of a Landy/camping and get into as many adventures as I can. If you want to talk about possible expeditions I'd be happy to swap ideas. The combiniation of a shoestring budget...

    Battery Issues / Cold Starting

Whilst changing some wiring in the cab two weeks ago I shorted a live wire to the chassis with a screwdriver accidentally. The result was a blown fuse, some smoke and a smell of burning :) I changed the fuse and didn't think it would be a problem. After the short I needed to get the...

Thanks again for all the useful info. Personally I've found it very useful as newbie owner :)

Dan, out of interest where have you mounted your fire extinguisher?

Daily use of my '72 S3 - crazy?

Yep, I am pleased as that was kind of what I was hoping. I am happy to get my hands dirty, top oil up weekly and check fluid levels every few weeks so I guess I should be okay. What I was worried about was random catastrophic failures from serious rust or parts just blowing up (unbased fear...

    Series 3 stereo and speakers?

Thanks Mike, Just thought, have you mounted an aerial for radio? If so whereabouts? Be interested to know where you have second battery also and how you have displayed all the other sockets and useful things! Do you have a photo? Cheers, Andy.

    Series 3 stereo and speakers?

Good morning Landy Lovers! I was going to fit a stereo in the S3 and of course some speakers to accompany. I don't want a big rude boy ICE installation but something to listen too when it's raining and the surf is flat would be nice. Does anyone have any clever ideas for a solution or...

White Smoke - Series III (1972) Petrol

Okay, so starting from warm there is no smoke. It definitely looks white to me over anything with a blue hue. Not overly thick and not exactly billowing but just started it up in a car park and it definitely stinks the place out. :biggrin1:
