    Temperemental starting and now dead!

 or :), I'm  To further confuse things, I have now put the starter and everything else back and turned the ignition to make sure it was all connected up and it went back to turning over properly again. After 5 minutes of fiddling (having not been started for 2 weeks) I got it...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

I have (beyond resonable doubt) eliminated the battery and wiring from this problem. I have also removed the starter motor and tested it on the bench and watched it fly round with no load on it. I now figure there are two things left as potential issues. Either the starter won't perform...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Since my last post I went back out and took off the cable from solenoid to starter. I cleaned the ends and checked the resistance which was 0 Ohms hmmm  so I connected it back to the starter and hooked the other end of it to my +ve directly from the battery (well, via a jump lead)...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

LATEST UPDATE :) +ve directly to starter motor, -ve earthed from engine. Starter motor turns a 'little' more consistently than before, but I still don't think it's spinning with the gusto it should be. Please view here and tell me what you think: YouTube - VID...

    Series 3 stereo and speakers?

Mate, what wires do you have so far? I guess the stereo is new? In which case it will have a standardised ISO connection at the rear. Do you have the ISO adapter for this with the coloured wires then coming out of that or do you JUST have the stereo? You will need the ISO cable in any case...

    Series 3 stereo and speakers?

Tidy! :D I like that a lot, I really don't like the many suggestions I've had to put it under the seat :( My air filter is in the way on my '72 though. Think you have inspired me to go and look see what I can get rid of from him lol

As per my post, wearing camo in Barbados (and I think a lot of Caribbean islands) is supposedly illegal. Camo clothes are the reserve of the army or officials and wearing camo can be interpreted as trying to impersonate such people. The places in the Caribbean I've been too don't take small...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Thanks for your replies chaps. I really don't think it is the battery. The battery in it now was on trickle charge for a day and night and showed 12.7V when I started using it and still showed 12.7 throughout and after testing. However, I have a second battery also on charge tonight which...

Thanks Griffdowg. I hadn't thought about the camo but now you mention it, I know even in Barbados they say wearing camo is illegal and that's about the most civil place I know (for an Englishmen at least). Good idea about the magnetic GB plates and yeah I guess what I meant about the stickers...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Back to my starting problem. This video shows what happens with the key turn ...this and not much else  I have checked all the electric connections as far as I can and they seem good. The earth strap is nicely secured to the battery tray, which in turn is on the chassis and the...

Thanks, got those from the same link. Hopefully I can salvage what's there but have the parts + numbers now should I need them.

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Thanks mate, that confirms what I thought. That link is great, why has no-one given me that before? :) The old choke seems alright but for not having a pull-lever where it should be. I guess it broke off, prompting the bodged replacement. Wonder if I can attach one again or if I'll need to...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

I saw a photo (can't find it now but through Google) which showed a choke on the same piece of metal as the ignition switch which I am now pretty sure is what my S3 has had at some point. It looks as though the choke lever has broken off and so the seperate choke which has been fitted was...

Hello All! I see many lovely expedition vehicles with flags and stickers on and just wondered what your opinion was on flying the flag as it were whilst travelling. I intend to go travelling in my Landy pretty much open ended this year and have no idea what areas I may end up in. My street...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

I'm starting to wonder whether the 'extra' choke cable I am trying to identify is perhaps the original choke cable and maybe that was situated next to the igniting switch? (I have a 1972 88" 2.25 petrol if anyone can confirm that for me??) Everything I can find points to there just being a...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Ah yes! The light which has often had me wondering why it never comes on  : The wiring diagram in my Haynes manual shows the White/Yellow wire as going from the switch (with the White/Blue wire) to a "Switch, Cold Start Thermostat". That's good, at least we are both in the same area...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

Reason I was asking about the wiring on the choke cable was because the White/Yellow wire was disconnected. I've just looked further though and seen the choke cable it is on is not even used anymore. A new one has been installed and the old one (in the picture) just left there. However...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

I'm just trying to make sense of my wiring looms (amongst the melted cables and 5 layers of leccy tape) and have come to this: It just seems to be a join for the two cables. However, I don't understand why it exists or what it may be doing other than joining them?! It is clamped on by that...

    Temperemental starting and now dead!

How loose is "loose" on the battery terminals? :D I can remove them by hand (because I have had a seperate battery issue and have needed to swap batteries out whilst testing) but they have good clean connections (and a small smearing of vaseline) and are pressed on snugly.
