Where do I start with my Series 3 timing?

Thank you I'll give that a go. I don't have a test lamp so will get one. Do I need to look for anything specific or will a £5 one that penetrates wire insulation be okay? If so do I need to worry about where it's pierced the cable insulation when I use it?

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

I forgot to ask one other thing: These tyres are marked as "regroovable". I have no experience with these sorts of tyres. Presumably getting them regrooved should be done when the tread is wearing down to get additional life from the tyre? And of course that will be cheaper than having to...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

Farrar - Ah ha, now I follow your logic and I agree that is what I would have done as well (if I could only have found the right figures on my tyres - not that I know, I am completely guessing hence asking for help here). The weight of my S3 88" is 2120KG. So for the sake of simplifying the...

Where do I start with my Series 3 timing?

Unfortunately I have had strange problems with the running. I really need to do the timing even if it's so I can just eliminate it from trouble shooting. Thanks.

    Original Roof Colour? (88" 2.25 Petrol, 1972)

I inherited the vehicle with black roofs and black wheels. I've just repainted the wheels limestone to match the body and unless someone shouts that white is right for the roof I am going to just do the roof limestone as well. I have to say, it already looks so much better with limestone...

Where do I start with my Series 3 timing?

Hello, I have the manuals to tell me the procedure for setting the static timing but before I even get there I need some help! Where do I actually look to see the timing marks referred to? I apologise for my lack of knowledge but am I looking at the pulley into which the starter handle is...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

I'm not sure what to make of these posts?! Farrar, your method may be correct but it does need a bit more explanation. Like why are you multiplying by 625 and why have you divided 35 by a thousand? Also, why are you dividing 35 by 1000? If you could elaborate I'd appreciate it. However, I...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

Hi, I have Firestone Super All-Tractions which were inherited on the vehicle. I've been trying to research them initially just to get some info on pressures I should be running them at. It seems they are quite fondly regarded as an off road tyre but renowned for noise and **** handling on...

    Original Roof Colour? (88" 2.25 Petrol, 1972)

Good morning, I always thought the roofs were limestone but have seen a couple of discussions and sites that says they would have been white. He is a limestone car anyway and I have a pot of paint so am tempted to just go with that but if it would have been white originally I might make...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

I'm very green so don't take advantage of me :) are you serious about chucking it in the tank?!! (she's a petrol) I've already decided I need to shell out on new balls. I realise now how bad they were - I had to post and ask though as I've never seen any before so wasn't aware just what...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

Mate, I haven't put it in anything, it was just picked up on a whim as was cheap and I thought I needed some EP90. That said, I would have happily used it for anything that suggested EP90. That is until you just bought it to my attention. Have done a bit of googling and see that I need to be...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

On the half shaft? Don't look worn but everything with this job has been such a ball ache I'd quite like to get it all replaced whilst it's apart - especially as I already have all the parts for the job. I'll compare them to the new parts though and if they really are identical perhaps I'll...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

Thank you mate. I have done all this with the parts catalogue and workshop manuals in front of me but still struggling a bit without any previous experience of what to expect. I hadn't previously appreciated how valuable it is to have someone of experience nearby to just advise on things when...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

Thanks James, I think I follow that. ...and Pef, I did see those collars but couldn't budge them and then forgot about them. No doubt I would have realised again when I tried to reinsert the half shaft but again that would have halted my job so having that kind of thing pointed out to me now...

    Swivel & Hub Reassembly

Hello All, I have got both my front sides stripped back to the axle casing. There are a number of outstanding questions, perhaps problems, that I have before I can reassemble now. Firstly, I should be berated for removing everything and not taking pictures and notes along the way. I...

Can't remove my swivel housing assembly

Thanks Oxides, washed the first few bits and they are rusty around the UJ yokes (and actually a bit bubbly/corroded) and the stub axles are themselves rusty too, though the half shafts seem in better nick. V8Jon - If you mean the bearing (part # 244150) and collar (part number 90217398) then...

Can't remove my swivel housing assembly

Thanks pef, I'll pay attention to that. The metal hundreds and thousands were definitely from the UJ. I have knocked the joint out and there are no bearings left on any of the 8 joins! You can imagine the gunk all components are covered in as every seal or washer is failed and the oil looks...

Can't remove my swivel housing assembly

The bottom bearing in the swivel housing looked intact but I was just reading about the universal joint in the workshop manuals and I see it refers to "needle rollers". That sounds like a good description of what these things are and I do recall now the UJ's being loose as I took them out and...

Can't remove my swivel housing assembly

Got the NS one off. Drivers side is well and truly stuck despite numerous attempts to persuade it. Have soaked with pen. fluid and guess I'll try again tomorrow. Now I have one off I can see that inside the swivel ball there are lots of metallic 'hundreds & thousands'!! I presume this is...
