Front axle freezes when brake back plate tightened???

I don't know as the side that (I think) went well is all assembled with the wheel back on. Is it worth me taking it back to the stub axle on both sides again to compare? What will it tell if they aren't equal?

Front axle freezes when brake back plate tightened???

Okay. I was getting tired tonight so called it a day and thought I'd throw it out here in case it was an obvious problem. I'll inspect the UJ a bit closer and see if it looks as though it could bind anywhere. From memory doesn't it suggest you need some kind of gauge to measure the clearance...

    Lube in my Hubs??

Very useful, thank you all. Guess I'll be buying some grease :)

    Lube in my Hubs??

Thanks mate. I've obviously been staring at the manual so long today it's all just meaningless to me now. I have a pot of thick orangey grease in a jar that my Dad had from working on the buses. I think it's for this kind of thing. Does it sound okay to use or do I need to be conscientious...

    Lube in my Hubs??

This seems a dumb question but I have to ask. When I reassemble my wheels I have lubricated the swivel housing. Nowhere in the docs does it tell me to lubricate the hub and with what. I presuming it must take something and sure gunk came out of them when I pulled them off but this no mention...

Front axle freezes when brake back plate tightened???

Hello All! I am just reassembling my NSF wheel having replaced all bearings etc. Off Side Front was fine and spins freely whilst other side is dismantled. SO I put the swivel housing on the near side and put the halfshaft in. With it in 4WD I then test it by spinning the OSF wheel round...

    front half shaft bearing

I often see the "warm it up" tip but exactly how much do you warm it and with what? I have a little blow torch - will that be sufficient or are you guys talking about blasting it with something much more heavy duty? Do I warm it for a minute try it and if not repeat or do I heat it until it's...

I need help with my balls.

Cheers James. Disappointed they weren't right for mine but sweetened knowing I can make my money back on ebay :)

I need help with my balls.

Thanks mate. It has 6 bolt holes. Also, top and bottom bearing holes are bit similar (in that the each have a stepped bit). There is an A embossed by the top bearing hole and what looks like a 1 by the bottom. So, early RR you think? In which case, how does the £30 I paid for them sound?

I need help with my balls.

I bought what I was hoping to be a bargain pair of chrome balls for my S3. I thought they were a bit smaller than mine but for £30 the pair at an autojumble I thought it was worth buying them anyway. It turns out that they are smaller than the ones I've taken off and so I am presuming they are...

Land Rover Friendly MOT Testing Stations

Thanks for the tips so far. I'll definitely be going to one of those mentioned. Maybe telling them they got my custom via Landyzone could result in future discounts for forum users :D

Land Rover Friendly MOT Testing Stations

IGP50, I'm going camping at the Dunsfold Collection tonight actually so will ask around and see what they say. Thanks for that pointer Patman, I'll give them a bell. Recently I went to the first cheap tester near me and got comments like "I should really fail it for that sump leak", "for that...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

A relevant question: My SATs rub on the chassis at full steering lock. I was hoping (once I get my front axle reassembled) it would just be a case of screwing out the steering lock bolt to fix this, but is that all or do I need to consider anything else to accommodate them? It failed an MOT...

Land Rover Friendly MOT Testing Stations

Hello All, I am thinking that certain MOT testers will be a lot more accommodating of a LR and it's 'quirks' than others may be. Especially when looking at a 40 year old one like mine. Does anyone have any advice for Land Rover friendly test stations? I am in Bracknell so would love to...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

I think we have made good progress with giving me some solid starting points for sorting on-road pressures, so to potentially open up a new can of worms ...How does off road driving alter the pressures I should be running?

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

This is nice to hear.. I have been using mine every day and for long motorway journeys at 70mph. I just put the **** stopping down to the car in general and never thought to blame the tyres. It's not been much of an issue as I've just adjusted my driving to leave a lot of space in front of me...

    Firestone SATs (pressure advice)

No they're not tractor tyres. I have done a pretty competent search for technical info on these tyres and come up with sod all and Firestones actual site was as useless as anything else out there! Hence I thought I'd start making some noise here until I got noticed :)

    Original Roof Colour? (88" 2.25 Petrol, 1972)

The bloke I bought from was good enough to include mine with the car. Paddocks supply it though, otherwise I know some places in Surrey if you're local?

    Original Roof Colour? (88" 2.25 Petrol, 1972)

Much better looking. Here's a comparison of my black wheels (as they were) and my new limestone wheels (which I love in comparison).

Where do I start with my Series 3 timing?

Understood. Thanks. When I'm adjusting the dizzy do I need to worry about where the advance/retard adjuster is? Should it be wound fully in/out or be somewhere in the middle prior to setting the dizzy position?
