if you remove the rear prop it should only be able to drive with diff lock engaged Ive never tried the driving with the hand brake on trick, it sounds doable but id rather slip it in lock from your description it sounds like your box is stuck in diff lock and now you have over heated the hand...

nothing wrong with that mate its all down to practice I found once you can control blowing holes in thin ****y metal,welding to bits of good metal becomes a lot easier :)

White light showing on the side or rear is a fail having 4 rear side lights you could remove the bulbs and lens of the faulty ones as long as the other 2 are legal , position ,reflector build in etc

A good old school one off flea bay would be an idea if you have the means to collect it they are made of better stuff As long as the ram is not dented or corroded you can get them re sealed if leaking Just an idea to consider :D

How about getting it all up and running and live with it for a while before you decide on and engine swop It will be on the road quicker and if you decide to do an engine swop you can source the parts at your leisure while running it

you may have to remove the pipe off the fuel pump and give it a suck (good job for the nephew) to prime it up and find out if the switch over tap works Thats if it a mechanical pump, if its ellecy its easier Go steady with the spending you may be getting close to half the normal buying price :D
