On the g/box oil - some of the later R380's on the 300 tdi's were specked to not use ATF - the gbox serial number should be sufficient to find the specked oil by LR having said that mine is a July 97 model and is specked for ATF The whine exactly as mentioned in post one was something I had on...

I think if the relay is getting hot then it is under specked for the current passing thru it the loose connection could of course also cause that

the in car linkage goes to the transfer case in line with the two props so if you crawl underneath you will see the linkage and maybe just a tap with the no 1 Land Rover tool

i am guessing but I suspect the fan pulley is the same size as the crank pulley and a white stripe on a fan blade might work well
