whats the best defender engine ? poll

As said by Treworgey in the very first post, it all depends... I voted for the 2.5NA diesel, for a number of reasons that do not necessarily apply in Europe, but are VERY relevant for an African bush vehicle. - The 2.5NA has greater torque at low revs than the turbo versions: you can trod...

Bug out Bag / Survival Bag / Grab Bag

FWIW, I have a small "Camelback" backpack that I always carry with me whenever we leave the car on foot in the bush (to be honest, I often manage to have someone else do the carrying... ). When picking animals' tracks, one never knows how long the walk will be - ten minutes or ten hours - or...

    help with me mac

Tricked out a Mac Mini? The bare-bone, rock-bottom, no-frills, cheapest-you-can-get last rung on the ladder? Well, one can't buy himself a Smart car, spend dough on it to try and make it bigger than it is, and say that it's a P.O.S. because it does not perform like a S Class Benz... Try again...

    help with me mac

PCs are much better for playing games. The fact that most games are written for PC surely helps... Tons of wonderful games where you can get yourself more artillery than the HMS Norfolk, and go around blasting ugly monsters or ****y neighbours. Splendid flight simulators where you can go an be...

    help with me mac

Lost my iTune downloads once (laptop stolen). I emailed iTune through Apple's customer service, and they got me almost all of them back through their archives. They allowed me to download back the whole lot, and were very helpful. Now, people who talk about Macs with a smirk have usually...

****e... I'd have given you my address. Been looking for a SII for weeks around here...!

Thinking of Taking your Landy to Europe

Not taking my Landy to Europe anytime soon. Got to cross the Sahara for that, and then I'm not sure she'd get the type of fuel she's used to, and I won't be able to buy spares at the local open-air market, and I'm sure that there won't be any decent bush mechanics there. She'll stick to the...

Auxiliary Fuel Tank or Jerry Cans?

On a SIII with tired suspensions, springs bottom out at 26-28 bags of cement, that's 1300-1400kg... Then you can still add some, but you have to be careful with the potholes or you'll break something. BTW, average specific gravity of fuel is around 0.70 for Avgas, 0.73 for Autogas, and 0.85 to...

Auxiliary Fuel Tank or Jerry Cans?

You're right. You can get an old Toyota pump in almost any village in the bush, and jury-rig it is just a matter of judicious use of a piece of old wire, Leatherman tool, and common sense. On the other hand, depending on the vehicle you have, replacing an in-tank pump requires dropping the...

Auxiliary Fuel Tank or Jerry Cans?

If a Pollak fails, unless it fails right in between positions, you have fuel from wherever it's set... which leaves you siphoning fuel from the other tank, which is exactly what you'd do if the transfer pump fails.

Auxiliary Fuel Tank or Jerry Cans?

Aux tank, if you can do it, no questions. You can always add jerrycans even if you have an aux tank, but can't do the opposite... BTW, if you go this route, you better use a 6-port valve (Pollak or other) and a switch on the dash to select the tank you want to use. Transferring fuel is always a...

Do you sleep in your Landy?

Not very often. And usually not for very long, the screams from the passengers make for a brutal awakening.

How seriously do you take passenger safety?

    Splendidly Hilarious Indeed, Teddy!

How seriously do you take passenger safety?

I take it very seriously. Rarely go around the bush with less than 3 large bore rifles, 3 AK47s, and 500 rounds of ammunition. And the visiting passengers do sign a disclaimer. But then, life is not boring around here... :D :D :D :D :D

    Nissan London taxi engine

Got one of them Nissan TD27 in my 90, I did not do the conversion myself, but it seems a straightforward job with only an adapter plate to the gearbox, and a corner of the left footwell modified. I so dislike the engine that I'm going to dump the 200Tdi in my 127" and fit a QD32... :D

    Engine forum, "Conversions" section?

Would there be an interest in an "Engine conversions" section in the Engines forum? Chime in, ye unfaithful who got (or wish they had!!!) a Japanese - or worse - lump in your Landy.

    Running 200tdi without intercooler

Took the rig for her first outing, 2 weeks in the bush. Well, the 200Tdi is on its way out. Friggin' turbo scares the heck out of animals long before they can see you. With my Land Cruiser (4.2 NA diesel), I can be 20m from an antelope, he'll just glance once in a while and continue feeding. If...

    Ideas needed - K9 problem

Not so... Probably easier to get lion crap in England, from a zoo or a circus, than in Africa, where you'd have to go and fetch it in the wild under the amused gaze of the pussycats...
