Debate....are they really making a diff

Good tyres would certainly be much more effective than trying to get run over by a stationary car... You don't go plowing your rye field with mocassins, do you?

    Anyone used POR15 paint?

Dries hard as glass. Why use it on a galvanised part??? POR15 is meant to be used directly on rusted parts that you can't really sand to the metal, works a treat.

Expedition vehicle - Range Rover Classic or Discovery 1?

In a Range Rover, you drop the tailgate and have a perfect sleeping space. Can't do that in a Disco. Around here, the RR classics usually belong to people who do go offroad and in the bush, the Discos belong to people who live in town.

    Britpart / OE Bushes

Britpart pattern bushes are absolute rubbish. Just installed the front set a few weeks ago: result, the big radius arm rubbers were completely gone (and I mean gone, nothing left!) in less than 1000 km. Had to jury-rig a replacement made with sisal rope and an old tube because I was deep in the...

    Removing Radius arms ??

It's a good idea to undo the bottom nut on the shock absorbers and lift the shock out of its fixing point, because the axle does want to move and will try and bend these...

What is it about Land Rover owners?

They're the most horrible thing to ever own as a vehicle. There's usually a length of time of about four and a half minutes between the time you become the proud owner of one, and the time you have to take a spanner to it. Then, once you start tinkering with them, it never stops for the next...

The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

Got mesself a brand spanking new set of Britpart front arms bushings and rubbers. They were torn to shreds in 800kms! (eight hundred, no zeros missing). On bad roads, ok, but that's what they're supposed to be meant for... Had to cut replacement radius arm rubbers from local shoes, made out of...

Cooper STT's or Insa Turbo Dakar???

Don't know the Insa, but Cooper STT have fantastic grip... and that's about all. Got something like 12,000 km out of one set (on a 127"), and it chips on rough/stony roads. On the other hand, Cooper ST/C have excellent grip, are chip resistant, and have exceptional longevity. I'm about...

How reliable/unreliable has your defender been?

    Reliably unreliable.

    bottle jack or hi lift

Got a bottle jack and a hi-lift on each of my cars, as well as axle stands. Bottle is safer (especially in the hands of local drivers...) and works better on a good surface, hi-lift is essential if you're offroad. Axle stands help you to make the thing safe enough to crawl under if you're...

Home Made DIY Land Rover Diff Locker

For an occasional need to stop a wheel spinning, fiddling brakes do the job, are easy to DIY, and you can keep the expense below £100. Basically, it's two brake master cylinders installed in the cab and activated manually, plugged in the rear (or front, if you so wish...) brakes so you can...

    How many have you had

Can't remember exactly, but to the best of my guesstimates, certainly more than two hundred, and surely less than five hundred. Oh, that was laNdies, you said? Sorry, sorry. That's 4 of them.

    Defender owners - What's your other car(s)/vehicle?

Color is Land Rover LRC 361, also known as Sand Glow. Thought a Land Rover buff would have noticed... :D Painted it the same color as my 127", reason is the tsetse flies really liked the dark Navy-blue original color.

    Now, that's a good engine...

Toyota 4.2lt 6cyl turbo diesel, slightly tampered with to get comfortably over 200Hp. Toyota gearbox, transfer case and propshafts, Disco axles and diffs, and you got yourself a car... It's a 110 pick-up, just won the Chimp Challenge (Uganda's foremost 4x4 event) for the third year in a row...

    cooper st

I have ST/C on one car, and STT on another one. I'm using both cars in the same conditions: long distance on asphalt and bad trails, and off-road in the bush. STT are excellent off-road tyres, but have very poor durability. Won't buy them again. ST/C are the best all-terrain I've had so far...

    Why Land Rover?

In Switzerland, if you buy a Landy the Army gives you 50% of the purchase price, provided a) it's painted green b ) you install rifle racks c) if there is a major fkcup with the Reds, they get to play with it. So, all the farmers had Landies to tow their hay trailers, and every uncle I had had...

whats the best defender engine ? poll

I'm telling the bollox myself... It so happen that I actually run safaris, not in National Parks where animals are used to vehicles and tourists, but out in the wild. 80 or 90% of the vehicles used by professional hunting operators are Toyotas LCs with 1HZ, 4.2lt 6 cylinders normally aspirated...
