Buying a Freelander - advice needed

As they say, 'There is always another car to look at' my advice would be to walk away, any slight issues you feel it has will only dwell on you, go look at another. If in doubt walk away. Zippy

Auxiliary power socket - easy to fit?

I take it its a cigarette lighter type socket, if so £130 is a joke to fit, get a volt meter and find the desired wires yourself, if its a dealer kit have you checked that the wiring doesnt have a connector pre-fitted to allow you just to plug the unit straight into the loom. Zippy

    Td4 max speeds.

You are correct in that speedo's are not that acurate, i use a GPS based Sat Nav that shows MPH and it shows a lower speed than the speedo by about 5MPH @ most speeds. All top speed stats by the manufacturer will be based on flat road top speed. Changing the sizes of your wheels will also...

    TD4 Hesitation @high boost roughly 4000rpm in 5th Gear.

As my 1st post states, the fuel pump would be my next choice after the filter.

    TD4 Hesitation @high boost roughly 4000rpm in 5th Gear.

Possible fuel delivery issue, has the fuel filter been changed recently ? I would change that first, as the problem with the 20 second delay sounds like either a blockage with the filter or a fuel pressure problem due to the high demand at speeds which could be fuel pump related. Zippy

    Help ! Unexplained Oil leak

The oil must leave a stain behind on the exhaust, remember the oil may be blowing backwards whislt driving. My point is you will need to get underneath the car and have a look underneath. You have mentioned you can see no oil at all coming from the top of the engine and leaking down the head...

    Help! Urgent and please!

If your just topping up the resevoir then tap water will be fine, there should be enough antifreeze in the system for you to just add water. Nearer the winter i would suggest adding some antifreeze or even go for a full service on the coolant system by replacing the old stuff with a 50/50...

    Manifold Rattle

Sounds like they wanted to take your pants down after giving you the download FREE. As with most things get a 2nd opinion from an independant garage, £800 seems very high to replace the manifold. Did they actually say what the problem is with the manifold, if its cracked can it be welded ...

The hill descent in my wifes 02 TD4 didnt light up on the dash and i removed the rubber gear lever boot and the Purple wire was snapped at the connection with the gear lever, a quick re-solder and it was all sorted. I would also look underneath your steering coloum for any loose connections or...

As Ming has already said, your problem seems identical to his, his fault only occured on a run and not in town. his was the fuel pump which proved to be faulty. Zippy

    she is running fine now

The MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor, it detects the rate of air entering the induction and adjusts the fuelling to match, any problems with it can cause your car to run rich or lean. Me personally i wouldnt go for the 57i type cone filter as you really need them mounting in the inner wing away...

    Rear tyre wear

It will be the rear tracking, a wheel bearing failling on both sides isnt likely and you would also hear and possibly feel if they where faulty. The rear wheels can be adjusted and i would suggest you get a 4 wheel laser allignment done on a decent machine with somebody who knows what they are...

    she is running fine now

Glad she is now back on song, it was always going to be a fuel delivery issue with your last fault :) I have just fitted a K+N performance air filter to my wife's TD4 and it does make a good improvement to the acceleration and mid range grunt:D I'm always a bit wary of a 'CHIP' upgrade for...
