Believe it's MTF for the R380 (300tdi) box, and ATF for the LT77 (200tdi). My gearbox was a bit kellogs crunchy nut before I changed the oil, just put the proper stuff in and it was fine after that.

What year is it? Although you list lots of problems nothing sounds too bad, just normal Landy 'character' really. Weekends work would get most of it sorted!

May I ask why you want to fit 285s? That's a very wide size, 235/85 or 265/75 are probably the two most popular sizes to fit on Defenders and will do everything you need. A wider tyre is also going to make more noise on the road, going for a slightly narrower tyre will give you quieter running...

My viewpoint exactly, but a mild steel pipe with all the fittings is going to be less than a tenner from Bearmach and requires no cutting and welding! I just can't remember the part number for the thing, and their parts browser is next to useless at finding specific bits!

Mine was £500, and while it's not quite as pretty as yours it came with 11 months MOT and was definitely roadworthy! They don't crop up that often though and when they do you'll have to settle for a tatty looking one most of the time. But you'll only put more dents and scratches in it off road...

The one you've linked is a 200tdi, the one in my avatar is a 300tdi. Larger headlights and indicator units, and a colour coded grille instead of the big black thing are the obvious differences.

If you've got £1300 to spend I'd hold out for a 300tdi at the very least. Could get a very late tidy one for that sort of money if you've got a bit of patience!

Get a roll of foam double sided tape and stick the original plate onto the sloping part of your bonnet. Mine came like this on the Disco in my avatar and has been seen by many a copper without any comments being passed.

Land Rover have a habit of fitting one wiring loom for all the different models, so you end up with a lot of extra wiring and plugs for kit you don't need. For example an airbag ECU plug in a vehicle that doesn't have airbags, or mine has all the electric window switch plugs in the centre...
