BTW running much better in terms of throttle response since blanking off the AGR valve, especially from cold........ I have sourced a very cheap plastic manifold with the correct agr valve, would it be worth swapping that over, considering how gunked up the current manifold is? Thanks

Great, thanks Wammers will do, as per Robs suggestion as well. When I stripped the engine down to get at the timing sprockets I had to get the gaskets from BMW........ Thanks again

Also what are the two hoses inlets for? There is a good strong spring pressure holding the valve closed.

Ok so here is the EGR off the vehicle, the valve seems pretty jammed but haven't cleaned it yet, is it usual for it to be so scuzzy in the manifold....... Thanks everyone for being so helpful.......and patient!!

Wammers, yes that sounds bang on, strange that the exhaust gasses cool the combustion process, always thought the exhaust gasses were raging hot!! Grrrr may give the expensive fuel a shot, but I think it's a little more complex

    Black Clouds 2.5 Diesel 2001

Thanks Mark I may well give those guys a shot. Would it help to blank off the EGR valve........or would that just cause more problems Ash

    Exhaust gas

I have that engine in my car (2001) but it does have EGR, may explain why I have a few problems, haven't got round to cleaning out EGR valve yet and I do get crankcase mist if I take the oil filler cap off

    Black Clouds 2.5 Diesel 2001

Yes Data, it has been run down from London to Cornwall quite a bit so should be fairly clean of deposits. It's a pain, as someone commented these cars are a hobby rather than transport........ In fairness it has been pretty good London to Cornwall and back comfortable and quiet transport a bit...
