The way l've always checked em is, disconnect the bus bar/wire that joins them all together, then run a live wire from the battery and flash it on the top of the plug, if it sparks it works if not its knackerd.

l had an old series 11a that did the same and was told it was the valve stem oil seals.

l'm not 100% sure on this it was a while back, but l think my series 11a Diesel had like a choke you pulled to shut the engine down. Rich
