Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

I have taller offroad tyres & slightly better ground clearance already - a 40mm+ lift is next & a custom exhaust. I understand that my freeby is good offroad - Ive done quite a bit both here in Spain/Portugal offroad - and think it's great. I also enjoy modifying cars and don't see why another...

Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

So the IRD doesn't contain a diff of sorts. I'm guessing the solution would be a lockable centre diff in place of the VCU then?

Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

So far I've not come across someone whose done it or why you necessarily can't. And I don't mean to have only two wheel drive - I'm thinking full time drive from four wheels. I understand how the VCU works (enabling drive to the rear etc) but is it possible to simply do away with it and run a...

Freelander 1 Longer roof rails from mk2

Thanks nodosh - I've seen those brownchurch racks and they're under consideration, the only problem being that I travel with a half width roof box & surfboards, so may need customising. I like the way they bolt onto the roof mounting points without the need for rails. The longer roof rails...

Freelander 1 Longer roof rails from mk2

Hi, has anyone tried to fit the longer roof rails from the mk2 to a mk1? I'm wondering if the mounting feet have the same pattern and the rear most support on the longer rails just rests on the roof.

Freelander 1 Suddenly smokey on startup

Thanks guys! That PDF confirms that it looks like #2 is a faulty then. Off to refurb then. Yes Teddywood I let all the lights go out before cranking -there's never any hesitation on start. Thanks again. I'll post back with results after a test/refurb/service on the injectors. Any...

Freelander 1 Suddenly smokey on startup

Well I'm still trying to solve this problem of intermittent lumpy idle and a puff of white smoke of firing up. Disconnected the MAF - made no difference. Cleaned the connector. Disconnected the fuel rail plug behind the EGR delete, cleaned. No difference. Did a leak back test and I'm uncertain...

Freelander 1 Suddenly smokey on startup

hello After running smoothly since I've owned my TD4 it's suddenly started to get lumpy & smoke a bit when first started up - after about 30 seconds or so it idles as smooth as butter as it always has...on the road there's no adverse fumes either. Any ideas what this could be?

What have you done to your Freelander today

That's what mine was like too! Grungy. And it was less than 5000 miles old... It feels smoother but that's completely subjective I know. BTW I bought a kit from Rimmer (I think it was) for about £13.

What have you done to your Freelander today

Finally sorted the knocking on left front by replacing tierod end and drop link - that's twice in a year now. Thankfully they're only a tenner & an easy job. Replaced the PCV filter system with a vortex one. It's incredible how clogged up that filter got in just a couple of weeks doing 4300...

Have I made a costly mistake?

Sorry to read this. I've only read that the K-Series motors had head gasket issues - there's lots of threads everywhere about that, perhaps some will be of help. Are you certain your new thermostat is working properly? It sounds like a classic malfunctioning if the coolant isn't circulating or...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Fitted new intercooler & intake hoses and EGR bypass. After using the 22mm copper bung since last year I figured it was time to go the whole way.

    someone please please help

Hi, you say the usual stuff - what exactly? Have you checked the intercooler hoses for holes? Checked the MAF sensor? Done a leak back test? Smoking generally means over fuelling relative to air

    Freelander 2 (LR2) Off road

Mine looks a lot like yours LandyMan - modulars and offroad tyres. I'm running Event tyres and have been very happy - done two trips down to Spain/Portugal through France. The 2" lift is next I reckon and perhaps a remap for more torque and a bit more grunt.

    Freelander 2 (LR2) Off road

Just returned from doing some off-roading in the Picos de Europa (Pyrenees) and Portugal and my Freelander was brilliant. Previously I'd only done greenlaning that also included some late winter laning that had some fairly deep muddy ruts that I thought might be an issue but were no problem at...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Fitted new front anti-roll bar bushes. Dunno what all the fuss is about, there's loads of access space to the 4 bolts. Still a slight knock so on to tie-rods now as that the only parts I haven't replaced... Then did an annual oil service, pollen filter, air filter and took a look at the...

    Td4 power and turbo options

I've heard that turbotechnics.com are the guys to speak to about this kind of thing. It's a bmw motor so there's surely a lot that can be done I'd think.
