We tend to just change the 3 top hoses from intercooler through to EGR pipe.....

take a plug out and check for spark....

Check the condition of the breather pipes and the mesh filter (I can never remember the name) or replace it with the BMW separator type.

Yeah, if you can afford it replace all 4 as you will definitely notice the difference. Otherwise placing the newest on the rear wheels will not place as much strain on the VCU

I had a clogged filter that couldnt keep up with the higher fuel demand under load.

Check the handbrake cable is releasing properly too as it can sometimes rust up being open to the elements....
