Your only hope with the MOT is if VOSA has not been able to identify which models had a CAT fitted at the factory. My 2005 Defender just failed on no cat, but I had kept the old cat pipe and just refitted it and replaced the centre silencer box with a straight pipe.

I'm all for more investigation, but if the tester can determine that a Cat was fitted at build and is now absent, it will fail MOT. It isn't retrospective since the Cat shouldn't have been removed in the first place. It wasn't an option, but a requirement for whichever Euro emissions standard...

I'm told the info is sketchy pre 2001/2002 and a lot of 300 tdi's had no cat as well as some early TD5's.

If it had a cat fitted when it left the factory, then it will need one to pass the MOT, but you may get away with it as the tester will probably not have information that one was fitted to older vehicles.
