    Help, is my flywheel shot?

How many miles has the clutch/ flywheel done? The flywheels are usually OK up to 100K. If it is near this it will be false economy only renewing the clutch and I agree with sierraferry, don't fit a solid flywheel, as it will destroy your transmission, particularly when towing a heavy caravan.

    Defender Price Drop

Most are going up in value. I bought my very low mileage (39,000) 2005 Defender 90 CSW in 2010 for £14,200. At my insurance renewal in May this year I got an agreed value of £15,000. It's now covered around 57,000 miles and that agreed value is not sufficient to replace the vehicle from a...

Which spec defender is best to live with?

The 2008 model would have a 2.4 ford Duratec engine and a 6 speed gearbox that was different to the earlier trucks with 5 speed boxes. The first gear is very low, so might feel different to drive. I presume the engines are reliable enough as they were fitted to Transits.

Which spec defender is best to live with?

If you mean the porous or cracked head problem, then yes, it can occur with any TD5 engine. Best cruising speed is 60 mph, leaving a little in reserve for overtaking. You could fit a Discovery transfer box that will give more relaxed cruising, but not so good for towing.

    Defender TD5 coolant change

Defo in the block etc. Just don't make the mistake, like I did once, of removing a cylinder head without draining the block:(

    Disklok size quickie

Large is a bit too loose and medium, a bit tight. One solution is to stick a layer of velcro on the inside and if still too loose another layer of non-stick on top. This protects the steering wheel even better than the standard padding. Some people weld half moon shapes of steel on the back...

    Markerstudy

Thankfully don't know them, but aren't all insurance companies the same with regard to finding the smallest discrepancy to avoid paying? You need to be fastidious in declaring any change to manufacturer's spec. How many landy owners declare different wheel/tyre combinations for example? Or...

Adrian Flux customer services (crap )

All service businessese have occasional problems. My own experience with Flux Customer service was excellent, when due to Lancaster not forwarding my proof of NCD in the 14 day period, I called customer services and a very pleasant female assistant offered to ring Lancaster and accepted the...

How noisey is your Defender and did sound proofing make a difference

If you like quiet motoring, don't buy a Defender. I love the sound of my TD5.

    Engine just conked out!

The pressure from the fuel pump is not that high. It's the injectors themselves that develop the very high pressure when in operation.

    Engine just conked out!

At first I thought this thread was a joke when the OP wasn't sure which engine was fitted even though it had TD5 emblazoned on the engine cover. Then when the main LR dealer claimed it had a timing belt which might have snapped, more or less confirmed my suspicion. BTW the plastic engine...

    Replacing rear discs

They are easy to remove. When you unscrew the hub nut (52mm socket required), the outer taper bearing will pull out easily. The disc/hub assembly is then free, but you need to unbolt the caliper and lift it up to clear the disc. The inner hub bearing and outer seal can be left untouched...

    slight judder at 70+ mph

Don't do 75 in a TD5 defender other than briefly for overtaking, the noise will drive you insane after a while.

    150,000 mile Defender TD5

Luckily it was caught fairly quickly, but I was never able to smell any diesel on the dipstick, just the oil level rising. The previous time I had checked the oil it needed topping up, then a couple of weeks later it was 1.5 litre too high. No apparent engine damage, all cam lobes were perfect...

    150,000 mile Defender TD5

My 53,000 mile 2005 TD5 defender has just had a new Spanish head fitted and this is the 15p engine that was supposed to have improved heads. According to Cheviot 4x4 that fitted it, loads of them become porous between 50K - 60K miles. There were no cracks, just porosity causing dlesel to...
